Smile TD5 Overheating Problem Head Gasket Replaced

    Hey Guys,

So its been ages since i have been on this forum. I used to have a black p38 with a lift kit and 33's so a few of you i have met.

I have now purchased a 99 TD5 (Manual) Discovery. So ive done the usual egr removal, Map Tune, Exhaust. My discovery started overheating about a month ago on the way to the snow, so i figured it must be the thermostat...put a new one in and drove it for a day overheated again. I thought ok so its the head gasket. I got the replaced now it no longer over heats....except for in obscure locations.

Its really frustrating it wont do it on normal highways and roads it will only do it when going up a rather steep long hill...when the car seems to struggle a bit getting up.

Its a manual so while going up a hill i might sit it anywhere between 2500 rpm and 3000 rpm then it over heats.

Ive bled the system twice both times had air in it..mind you it overheated in between them.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what could cause this. I dont seem to be loosing water until it overheats aswell.

    Thanks Guys,

P.S the radiator is fairly new aswell.

Have you checked the water pump, viscous fan and thermo fan operation?
An overheat following the head gasket change could well have undone the repair effort. Was the head machined, crack and pressure tested before refitting?

    cheers

Ive checked the viscous fan and the thermo fan operation both seem to be fine. the head was machined crack and pressure tested came back fine. The only thing i havnt checked is the water pump but i dont see any leaks...im assuming my mechanic would have checked the operation of the water pump?

My heater also works fine there arnt any cold spots...

    Thanks,
    Mike

Mine was overheating in the same way as yours, working hard off road.
I only picked up on it when I fitted the Engine Saver.

Mine was a crook viscous fan.
It was spining on the first start of the day and "droping out" as it should.
When the motor was warm you could spin it easily and there was no resistance.
No problems since fitting the new one.
    Cheers, Kyle

Never assume anything with mechanics, they can get distracted and overlook things. I've heard my share of mechanic horror stories.

    Hello M.Allison
Try pulling your water pump out and having a look. When I did a cooling system overhaul, the bottom of the waterpump was full of waxy crud. The gallies in the waterpump were also blocked with the same stuff.
    It's worth a look.

    Cheers,

    Jason

Make sure your radiator cap holds pressure. One of the most over looked items. If you find any of that waxy crud or deposits of any kind make sure that you radiator isn't blocked.

    Good luck

    Dave
