    TD5 air conditioning compressor

    Hi all,
A question about the air con compressor in the TD5.
Mine has completely shot itself. There is metal slag coming out of where the clutch plate is housed, and it stinks a burning smell when the air-con is turned on.

I am wondering if the clutch part of the compressor can be serviced?
Or do I need a new compressor? If so, is there an after market compressor, or only OEM.

I have done a bit of web searching, both on this forum and the interwebs in general, but have only fould that the compressor is a Denso ?? No idea of model number that I could find (not even in RAVE, unless I have missed it).

    Any hints folks ???
( I'll insert a pic tomorrow if I get time)

I did find the Denso part number recently when the front half of my clutch fell off. I will dig it up if I can find it.

you need a new one, odds are the compressor is siezed and has rooted the clutch whenit tried to engage however you might be lucky and find that its just the support bearings in the clutch gone. About 90% of the time when that happens the crank of the compressor gets damaged and the unit requires replacing anyway.

    Thanks for your replies.
A new compressor it is, by the sounds of it.
I have found a new OEM for $330 odd from the states (no idea of delievery time yet). Beats $1800 for the part as qouted by LR here in Aus.
The car is parked until I get it, as the wheel holding the belt driving the compressor has just about come off (I take it that if it does come off whilst driving that this would not be good).
    Ah well

    AC problems

Following this thread with interest. My compressor has just started occasionally making a squealing noise when the clutch kicks in - sounds like the serpemtine belt slipping (as well?). Is this repairable? It doesn't do it all the time - just did about 1500 km trip with no problems but then did it twice today. Any ideas - is it likely the clutch bearing as suggested below?

    cheers

    Thanks Stuuu,
Thanks, Yes, did see this on ebay. But decided to go with a new one anyway.

Willis, the noise you talk about sounds the same as what I was hearing. Not much and not too often though.
I thought the serpentine belt might have been wearing, and just made a mental note to have the mechanic check it at the next service.
Next think I knew, melted clutch, with the fly wheel just about coming off.
I'm not much of a mechanic, so knew no better. And I wouldn't know how to check the compressor (apart from a visual) to determine any damage (maybe remove the belt and check the flywheel for any noise when manually turning it ???). Someone on here will know better and might comment.

Anyway, found the OEM part cheap (and it was delivered in 30 hours from the USA !!!) so the damage is no too bad. Should have it fitted and back on the road this week.
