    Viscous Fan always on??

    Hi all,

    Lately i've been noticing that the Viscous fan has been turning on a few seconds after start up no matter what the ambient tempreature is and the car is cold (eg: in the morning). It sounds like its on all the time while driving.

    It has no play front to back (already replaced the original in Darwin) but any other suggestions would be great.

    How hard is it to turn by hand? When mine failed it was very free to turn by hand, by comparison the replacement was hard to turn when completely cold, but eased up as warmed up then would tighten again when it got warm.

    My new 300td1 viscous fan roars for a loooong time after start up. maybe 2-3Km before the roar subsides. This is caused by the fluid being thick when cold and also pooling in the bottom of the fan.
    My old 3.9 V belt viscous stopped roaring much more quickly, but then it had maybe 140KK on it.
    The most common failure is a seal failure leaking the fluid out of the hub and the fan spinning free with no fluid.

    You can drill it and put a bolt or screw through it if stuck somewhere and need to keep moving. Though need to be aware of the potential for unbalance.
