    Roof Rack

Anyone know the best place to get one of those big roof racks you see on 4 x 4s kitted out for a long trip. You know the ones you can stand on and put all your gear on etc.. Im in WA so dont want the expense of freighting from over East.

    Thanks mike

I'm sure you'll find a supplier out West. Just be aware that D2's don't much like heavily laden roof racks. Actually they don't like them at all. They get cracks in the B pillars due to the roof rack changing the way the body flexes. I had to get mine welded and from what I gather, it's a pretty common occurence.

My owner's manual indicates the maximum load on the roof, including the rack is 60kg. Oggie's load would seem to be way in excess of that. Would such loading negate one's insurance in the event of a roll over? What's people's experience with how the car handles with a heavy load that high?

The roof racks rated up to 200kgs, even as you say the manual states 60kgs. The car handled exceedingly well on and off road and as stated it did the Canning Stock Route as pictured.(many dunes and corrugations). King Springs and Bilstein shocks performed magnificently.
I actually fell into a rut on a salt pan and the car was at a 45 degree angle and didn't tip over .
The main issue is to keep the load balanced especially the fuel.
I suppose if you want to do a long range outback track with no facilities available you make the call and rely on your experience and equipment.

i think the 60kg refers to the factory roof rails running front/rear, also states 30kg for offroad.
from memory the gutter mount limit is 100kg.

100kg for gutters would be limit when driving, true. Be careful that you also increase the center of mass - in case you will be doing some serious 4WD.

Otherwise, the gutter mount itself can handle a lot (not driving), I have a roof tent mounted on gutters on 4 points (2 roof racks) and can easily take 250kg...
