    Wheel Nut Covers!!!!

    Hi, All

Can you help me please???? The wheel nut covers on my car seem to be immovable - and the plastic 'pull them off' thing has broken!!

Two things - how the hell do I get the covers off the nuts?? and, can I just purchase a wheel nut cover puller?? (may be I need to get a few!!)

    Regards

    Ray

Just checking..but you are trying to pull off the cover of just the locking nuts, aren't you? Not all 5?

And the plastic pullers are crap. Even Genuine Land Rover ones break. The best thing is, put a little copper slip on the inside when re-fitting them. If they have corroded on the you have to be pretty brutal with pliers, etc to get them off.

Same thing happened to me - lost a couple, replaced them and to make sure they stayed on I squeezed them out of round very slightly; it worked, until it came time to take one off; too tight for fingers or the hopeless removal tool, which broke in pieces. Luckily a water-pump / wide-opening pliers worked fine; just rock them slightly while pulling gently - put a rag over the tool if you're bothered about scratching the covers.

Next stage - as most of the experts her will probably advise you - get rid of the stupid locking nuts and put ordinary nuts on - thats what I'm about to do.

    cheers

More clarification. There is only 1 nut per wheel which has a cover. All the rest you just take off the car like any other car. Throw the spanner on and start turning.

You would not be the first to attack all five wheels if that's what you are doing.

I recently had the Disco reshod, I offered them the plastic puller but the tyre place has a piece of coat hanger wire that had a fish hook bent at the bottom. They just pulled them off with that easy as. Some of mine had a dob of silicon on them to hold them, they also got them off.

i recently used a rattle gun without removing the covers, no damage to them and the nut came off easy. Then reinstalled them with a rattle gun. no one is the wiser

    Red face Oops!!

Looks like I broke the plastic tool as I had been trying to take the other stainless steel covers off the non-lock nuts!! Fair dinkum! So, run that past me again - the only one that comes off is the lock nut cover??

    Thanks heaps

    Regards

Correct - in theory. Frequent use to rotate tyres or change from road to dirt tyres can loosen the covers on the standard nuts which normally don't come off. As peterg said, if those come off or get too loose, just take the cover off, distort them a little and bash back on. Silicon is a good idea, though.

Correct, only the coded lock nut will give up its cover to the plastic removal tool. The others don't normally come off.

If they are original wheel nuts the cover you need to pull is the one with the indent.

All the other nuts/covers fits your wheelbrace as is.

    Duh?

Suddenly I feel a bit dumb.
How do I identify this special lock nut?
I noted wobbly shiny covers on the wheel nuts but ignored them and have been happily changing wheels by just putting the LR wheel spanner on over the covers and all.
Should I have a different spanner for this 1 special nut per wheel?
