To Clean Your MAF Or Just Replace it?

There was a pretty long thread on here not that long ago about cleaning MAF's and the improvements that gave, which I also agreed with after cleaning my MAF at the time.

On reflection after fitting a new MAF recently I would have to say if your MAF has done some big miles then just buy a new one as the difference powerwise and especially with fuel economy has been stunning.

I had forgotten how nice the D2a is to drive when it goes well powerwise and now through Ebay you can buy a new MAF for not alot of money. I am now getting over 150 (country driving) k's per tank better fuel economy from what I was getting even after cleaning.

In the 70,000 + k's I have driven the old girl it has never gone this well so for me I'm just a bit annoyed I didn't change it sooner even though various mechanics in the last two years after servicing have said it was working fine.

    cheers,
    Terry

What is the fuel economy in litres/100km. I generally sit between 17-18 l/100km (V8-D2a) for city and think around the 15 mark for country.

Usually 90 litres per 520 km for city.

Until you asked I hadn't looked for several weeks but there was a mob from the UK advertsing them on ebay here in Oz for about A$80 from memory along with free postage. I doubted this so I emailed them and they replied that yes it was free postage as well to Australia. I just checked and their advert is not up there right now but when I get back from the 10th birthday gathering I will look ofr the email I sent them and their reply.

I did find one on there now for $260 from a Australian supplier so not fantastic but better than many.

    Hi Andrew,

re mileage, my MAF was obviously stuffed I was getting about 450 to 500 k's to a tank prior to fitting the new MAF, now on 98 octane I have done 610 k's and still wasn't near empty, as a guess I would have got about 650 k's before being very low. On 95 I got just over 600 k's before being near empty. Early days yet to work out average numbers that are truly reliable but after nearly three tanks of fuel I am very happy with the improvements.

On 98 octane ii now feels that good powerwise that it is like a different car.

    cheers,

That's real interesting coz when I run 98 in mine (even 95) it runs like a bag of nails, and that's flushing through a few tanks too. And I've tried it a few times.
Back to regular 91 and she runs great and smooth again.....

    Watching with interest.

I also use 91 and no problems. I like to use the term running like a mountain goat but have not had the opportunity as yet.

and this is whats doing my head in......

Even though it's not running right, with a good mix of city/hwy driving I'm averaging low 16's per 100klm consistently, 18ltr/100klm at worst flogging it with nearly no fwy, and got 14.4 with heaps of fwy* (cruise on 110kph)

If it needs it, why is my fuel consumption still pretty good by most accounts?
    I CONFUSED......

I only use 98ron as I'm sure I can really feel the extra punch of the line - felt VERY flat when I first got it. Now I just give it a little SQUEEZE off the line, a little quicker than traffic but seems to be working for me. Let it change gears at 2250/2500rpm.

YES, I get bored driving and do this stuff

    * that 14.4ltr/100kph I worked out x3 times but I still dont really fully trust the figures..... Was a lot of flat fwy though.

    regards

I would be stoked if I got 14.4 litres per 100 kms on the highway.

Sounds like everything is in very good working order.

Regarding the MAF, when they get old, no amount of MAF cleaner will fix them. The best thing to do is as per what the OP said, which is to buy a new one. But if you are getting 14.4 litres per 100 kms on the highway, there's every chance your MAF is working as it should.

Note guys that I am still VERY suss at that 14.4l/100k. Until I do it again I really wont believe it.
If the sensor is stuffed, economy sounds like one of the first thing to suffer?
I think I need to look elsewhere....
