Zinc is and additive that has been added to engine oils (both mineral and synthetic) at varying levels for many years. It is added for its anti wear properties especially between rubbing surfaces such as the case with flat tappet camshafts. Modern engine design has removed many of these metal to metal sliding contacts, friction reduction properties of oils have improved, and for economic and environmental reasons zinc levels have dropped in many modern engine oils.

Land Rover does not specify a zinc level for its recommended lubricant but gives an ACEA specification (European equivalent of the American API system). Land Rover recommends ACEA A1 and A2 specification for this vehicle. These ACEA specifications contain many conditions, anti wear properties or anti wear limits are just one of these conditions.

Nulons recommended oil for your vehicle that complies with the manufacturers original specifications (exceeds the ACEA specs) and contains zinc additive is our FULL SYNTHETIC 10W-40 HI-TECH FAST FLOWING ENGINE OIL . It has a zinc level of approximately 1100ppm (0.11%).

ACEA A1/B1 oil tests are pretty basic, and all the ACEA A/B tests call for the same cam scuff/cam wear limits.
I've listed the differences somewhere here between the ACEA A and B specs but can't find them ATM.

and this is a very, very good paper on engine oils for flat tappet engines http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Corvair_oil.pdf

I haven't spoken to Richard online in years, but he's a nice bloke and is a very switched on oil wholesaler in Bolivia so sees some weird and wonderful stuff.

I just buy the off the shelf Castrol Magnatec from Repco or Supercheap, whoever has a sale. That's what my Land Rover dealer uses anyway, so if its good enough for them, then it's good enough for me.

The Rover V8 is not a particularly fancy motor, so no need for fancy oils that the more modern engines require.

I use Castrol Magnatec 15w40 for my disco, I also use it in my wifes holden astra, and will use it in my sierra project vehicle. It's handy only having to use one oil so I always have some on the shelf, magnatec seems to be working fine in these cars. My neighbour also uses it in his commodore.
    Cheers Matt
