I assume you mean a 3.9 litre V8. I have always liked and used Castrol GTX 20W/50 for older [model year] engines. Hand in hand with good oil are 5000km/6 month oil and filter changes.
Hi
This will have surely been asked heaps of times before - but the oil market keeps changing!! What is the best possible oil I can use for my V8 engine oil changes?? Car has just gone 162,000ks with FSH records
Thanks heaps
Regards
Ray

I use Valvoline semi Synthtic "Engine Armour" 15/40. I found no difference in oil consumption between 40 and 50 in my 92 RRC 3.9 with now 207KKm.
Of course mine has had recent heads with teflon seals added. Most oil consumption in V8s is down the guides in older engines.

I use Penrite HPR-5 Semi Synthetic - 5W40
Whatever you use just make sure it isn't a API GF-4 or ACEA C1/C2/C3 oil or says 'energy conserving' anywhere on the label as it won't have high enough ash levels for adequate lifter/cam protection.
While it is possible to formulate an oil without high ZDDP levels and have good scuff protection go for one that advertises high ZDDP levels (zinc) or says safe for flat tappet cams.
Personally I think an xW-40 is fine and wouldn't go heavier than an xW-50, it just isn't needed.
Castrol GTX 15W-40 seems to work fine for me (225,000k). As Grumbles states, every 5000Km/6 monthly change.
I am using the Valvoline SynPower 10w50 in our v8 d2.
Seems pretty good.
Is it only me,I find myself now looking for oils that won't do damage, perhaps we have to many choices,![]()
I use penrite 5w 40 as well,i am going to next grade higher next time.that is of course someone dosn't invent a oil that will repair cam lobes and lifters first.
