Got SLS rear Susp? Can I save you $1000???

I had a VERY costly incident last week.

Pulled up at a mates place and the self leveling suspension compressor was still buzzing away.
Tried everything I could to try and 'trip' it to stop - key on/off, start car/stop, hit the 'raise' button etc etc - no joy!

I had to drive another 20 minutes to work and by the time I pulled up at the warehouse the compressor was making very unhealthy jerky sounds, topped off by a burnt plastic/electrical smell when it finally stopped.

    Sounds costly? It was.

Over phone diagnosis with a parts supplier/mech was most likely a faulty regulator - $26 part! - and it fried the whole compressor! $1000 down the toilet!

Moral of the story - speak to someone in the know and maybe its a good thing to change the regulator at your next service?
And hope you dont get a dud one and fry the compressor anyway.......
Dont expect the compressor to handle a 20-30 minute workout - park it and pull a battery lead off the terminal.
Or even better learn where the fuse is under the bonnet, so worst case if you hear the little sucker pumping away constantly just pull it out!

Yep, fuse was blown, but obviously WAY to late!

Hope this can save someone out there!

    regards
    Darian

Sorry to here it DM, there are other things I would rather be spending $1000 on.

I suppose "faulty regulator" means the SLABS relay was stuck on. This is a pretty common fault with relays.

This is the first time I've heard of a stuck relay killing the compressor.

    This could save you $500

If you can change a light bulb then you can change your compressor, just take a note of which hose goes where and change them over. Check out overseas suppliers this is an example but there are plenty more and $ landed will be half what you are quoted

True, same here. I was talking about relays in general.
Perhaps not so common, but not unknown.
I have had it happen on a lighting circuit in my old commodore, where the headlights stayed on with the switch off.
Anyway, I'm still still not sure what DM meant by "faulty regulator".

Couldnt you just pull the plug from the compressor?? might give you an error on the SLS system but would have saved your compressor.
