Is overfilling an auto gearbox bad?

    Hi all,

The gearbox on my Td5 has had a few thumpy shifts and high revs before upchange incidents this weekend so I thought the least I could do was check the oil level.

When opening up the filler plug I was greeted by a torrent of oil and quickly had to put the plug back in - it wasn't just a dribble as the RAVE filling procedure describes. The fluid still had a reddish tinge to it so wasn't too bad but is there somewhere higher than the filler plug that someone could have mistakenly used, and could this cause some of the symptoms and/or any further damage? The car was stone cold when I checked this.

    Cheers

    Rich

    Here is the full story.
You have to check it warm with the engine idling as per this link.

No mate this is the only place you can fill it it has a top fill plug and the drain plug

As for over filling don't think it would do to much to it they may not have filled it with the car level or maybe you where down hill I just did a change on mine. At first de plug a heap of oil spat out then slowed after half a liltre came out

Best thing might be geta service kit or just check the magnet in the pan for any metal.

The reason you check the oil level with the engine idling and move the transmission through the gears is that there is usually about 4 litres in the sump, but there is another 4-5 litres in the torque converter and cooler.
Some of this can drain back into the sump if the pump is not pumping it through the cooler and TC, so you get a false high reading.

If you are measuring it with the engine off you are getting a false high reading.
