How long since you replaced the fuel filter?
Hi all, I am having some issues with what I think is fuel pressure related. Here is the story so far.
I have a 1999 TD5 manual discovery with 330,000km's on the clock. On Friday aftyernoon while setting off on a camping trip with the family I noticed a severe lack of power and spluttering while going up hills. I pulled over and noticed the fuel filter was cold so I called my local mechanic who said it was most likely the fuel pump so I went straight around to get it diagnosed. He replaced the pump and charged me $845.00 (WOW that hurt) and we were on our way again.
About 2 minutes up the road the car was going even worse so we turned around and went back to have it looked at again. After some testing he said the new pump was shorting and had to be replaced which he did. The car ran better so we continued on our trip.
Once on the highway I noticed there was no power and the same pluttering happening but at much higher rev's (around 3000 to 4000 rev's). This was really a problem as I could not overtake safely and I had just spent a crap load of dollars on a new pump.
I have to go back to the mechanic in the next few days to resolve the problem but I'm not confident he will be able to diagnose the problem. Has anyone had similar issues or know what might be the cause?
I hope I haven't rambled on too much, but I couldn't find any posts relating to this problem after a new pump has been fitted.
Thanks in advance.
By the way both pumps are genuine VDO units.
How long since you replaced the fuel filter?
I replaced the filter around two months ago.
Out of interest...take the plug off the ECU. Is it covered in oil?
I haven't checked as the car was running fine before the pump failed, but I'll have a look after work today. Thanks for the tip.
Did the pump fail?the car was running fine before the pump failed
I assume the mechanic plugged the car in to a suitable computer to get a fuel pressure reading?
Fuel reg blocked... id be looking there first
Does it have a cat I,ve had couple of this block and had the same symptons changed cat all good
Thanks for the replies, I'm at work so I'll be quick.
The think the pump did fail as the filter was cold after running for 20 minutes and I could not here the usual buzz of the pump. I assume the mechanic checked the pressure as he plugged the car into his "Test Book" tablet (I think that's what it's called). I am going to see him Saturday morning so I'll ask all these questions. I would rather have him look at it as I have paid for the car to be fixed before I start working on it myself.
Thanks for the feed back. I'll definitely post the final outcome when I know it.
