td5 Disco throttle problem
Hi, newbie here
Mum has a stock standard 2001 td5 manual Discovery, its has 170k on it and is due for a clutch (1st), anyway dad and i both drive it hard when we do but mum drives it easily most of the time, the other day i was driving it and noticed when i changed up a gear under acceleration i would take my foot off the throttle and push the clutch in as normal (in that order lol) but through each gear the motor reved for another fraction of a second like it was still injecting fuel (the revs came up as the load was removed), this seemed to go away for the next few days, but then yesterday it came back and was doing it much more frequently, and today is doing it every time you back off the throttle, this is strange so i did a test i accelerated to about 50k's in 3rd gear then backed off the throttle instantly, it seemed to keep goin for like another half a second or more then i felt it load up the gears with the engine braking, does anyone have any ideas dad thinks we have confused the computer and maybe we need to reset the throttle mapping (is it possible to do this by disconnecting the battery for a period of time), otherwise we'll have to take it to the lr service place but we usually service it ourselves, if anyine has had this happen before it would be much appreciated if you could tell us how you fixed it
Thanks
Will

Sounds like the throttle pot (potentiometer) is on the way out, Has your mum had it in water to the top of the footwell ?
at the risk of stuffing it completely you could try tapping the pot with a small hammer
A new throttle pedal complete with pot is only about $100 or so

cheers mate, dad thought that might have been it, no water for a few years even so the deepest its been through is sort of halfway up the doors in floods, but he is not as electronically minded as mechanical so i think he'll get it looked at, the other thing is we used wide open throttle the other day so maybe the pot has gotten a bit confused

Check for any oil at the red ECU plug, mine has done the same before. It will hold revs between gear changes and make it pretty average to drive.
Its a pretty easy thing to check to eliminate the problem.

Check the crank position sensor and the bell housing for dirt and oil inside.
This can cause a noisy signal to the ECU resulting in altered crank signals and injection timing.
Best way to check is with a Nanocom and look at the cylinder balance.
Idle should give you an even balance with readings in the +- 1-4 bracket. Anything more than 6 and you have a dodgy or dirty sensor.
A good spray inside the bell housing with degreaser and a hose out should fix it.

Sounds like clutch switch as well, when off they can flare revs...
Throttle mapping doesnt get "recalibrated" the 2 and 3 track assemblies are self calibrating....
All other above suggestions are possible...
Have you checked the engine isnt "making oil" - leaking fuel into the oil - detectable by rising oil levels...

no we changed the oil the other day and it was down slightly, but pulled the red plug off the ecu this morning and there is oil all over it, we will have to replace the injector harness and then if it is still doing it, replace the throttle pot as i have a feeling this is the problem as it has done strange things before, but i am happy we have found where the little bit of lost oil is from, but we'll take it in to the landy place soon and they can play with it

In case anyone reads this at a later date i though i would update how we fixed the td5's throttle flaring problem, it happened to be the clutch switch which is a switch in the hydraulic line that tells the computer when the clutch is dis-engaged so it cuts revs, this was leaking hydraulic fluid and the switch was not working properly, so it was a cheap fix, then came bleeding it
not easy, but as other suggested i did find oil on the ecu from the injector arness so we cleaned that off and will replace it at a later date as i have cleaned it, but it seems after 10 years all the rubber/plastic starts to go in these things, and it needs new clutch hydraulics but thats another story, good luck to anyone with the same problem, we love the car still wouldn't swap it for any jap crap
