Question Dumb question - Gear selector knob

I need to lift the centre console in the 2001 TD5 Auto. OK, Rave manual says "Select position 'D', remove gear selector knob and collect spacer" in that casual, off hand, manner we all know and love . So, just how does the knob come off? I've tried lifting it, unscrewing it, muttering incantations to it - it just does not move. What am I missing?

It does take a bit of effort. I still worry I'm doing something wrong, right up until the point it just slides off.

Never hit myself in the head though

Speaking of getting things on the console off...

How do I change the handbrake leathery thing. I can't seem to get the piece out.

Turn it inside out, over the handbrake handle (does that make sense?)
I seem to recall that when I did that, I worked out how to remove it.

Can't for the life of me remember what it was though. Just remember that it took me ages to work out how to remove it.

It just 'clips in' to the console surround, and as suggested just roll the cover up over the hi lo knob and there is an Oring there holding the leather to the base of the knob.

Thanks! Had a quick go when I parked it this avo, got the window control panel off and saw where the wires hold in the leather. Will have a proper shot tomorrow!

It's nothing like the gear knob on my Mazda! ha!

Took the cover off mine today as it's broken. Didn't hit me in the head, thanks for the warnings above.
I think I may find Jimmy Hoffa in there though!
