Question Stiff Steering wheel on D2

    Hey guys..
    Iv got a 2001 TD5 disco...
I was reversing the other day and the steering wheel turned stiff suddenly, and has had no change since...
it seem to go stiff then free up the turn stiff again when turning the wheel..
-Checked the the reserve.. and its just above the min level...
-the pump seems to work as the reserve bottle was bubbling?? pump looks dry from underneath..
-Joints on steering arm look undamaged...
not sure what else to look for?

Unis on the steering shaft binding? Try a bit of CRC on the UJs to attempt to free them if they are binding - they're not greasable, AFAIK. Jack the front up to make it easy for yourself.

Does it become easier with more revs on the engine?

Mine has something similar, at very low speed a stiff point just right of centre. Can't physically move it at all without some movement of the car and need to turn through it (more right) as will not go left until you turn over the point. New pump, hoses, ball joints and box stripped/inspected. Hadn't thought of the unis and as hey are the only thing not done...

Nah its exactly same when in stand still or traveling at 70kmh... it doesn't feel heavy as in the power steering has completely failed... just a clumpy clagy feeling all the way around

With the symptom of, stiff then release as turning, my money would be on the steering unis as well.

steering unis as well, you have to take the uni's off to see how rooted they are. mine did exactly the same thing, prefect one day clunky the next.
and they cant be greased, just keep spraying them.

    cheers phil

To check the steering unis you will have to take out the mid shaft, they will feel "grabby" or just stiff, if so HAVE to (by law )replace the shaft, new unis attached. Do all this with a cool engine bay, not to hard a job but do not buy from a dealer, try aftermarket as Im sure their all made by County. I did all this on my old 200tdi but it took some time to work out WTF was going on.

If you're tight for $$$$, go second hand. Talk to AMV, Ritters, and all places north and west. Or talk to Bundalene on this forum - he wrecks Discos.
