Topix also gives the warranty start date which corresponds to the date it was sold by the dealer.

For the record John's D2 was a Jan 2004 build.

There seems to be at least a few instances of MY04 D2's receiving compliance plates up to 11 months after they were built. There was recently a MY04 D2 with a late August 03 build date listed on carsales with a compliance date of 07/2004, for example.

I can only speculate that the demand for MY04 was relatively weak due to the impending release of the D3 which lead to a stockpile of D2a's which took time to shift?

In the end the build date is pretty much just about bragging rights, and the MY04's are still the best sorted of the D2's.
