    front propshafts (again)

Have checked "the Good Oil" but would be grateful for some basic info.Have been recommended to check front UJ's due to whine. What does one look for? Mine have no visible signs of wear and does not have any movement when pushed/pulled.A small amount of movement when twisting the shaft that I take is normal. The Front UJ has a grease nipple but no nipple on the shaft. The sliding spline has a bellows type rubber boot with a permanent factory fitted clips so I guess they must be greased for life?? What is the best type of grease fot the IJ's. Car is a 2004 model with 118K on the clock.

The sliding spline has a grub screw that needs to be replaced by a grease nipple for servicing. The grub screw is then put back.
A suspect propshaft usually shows deterioration on the outer ends of the UJ.
I would replace the non-greasable UJ's with greasable type as insurance against failure, even if you think they are okay. See Urban Panzers great website for details.

    Sliding Spline.

I should have mentioned the shaft does not have a blank for a grease nipple. As I have had the car from new it is factory fitted.

Pull the shaft and move the flanges through their range, watch the caps. If they rotate in their holes then it's certainly stuffed (or in need of good repair). The "chirping" noise spoken of is the caps moving in their holes as they dry up and seize on the cross. I found this on mine and narrowed down the noise to the caps moving as I put a spot of weld on the cap and it went away.

The holes very quickly get put out of round by the cap turning.
