I have a D2 TD5 1999, and before that had a D1 TDI300. The D1 I picked up at 140K and after a few niggles with the PS pump and brake vacuum pump (and door locks!) it was very reliable - my kids drove it and apart from oil changes over 6 years and 160K I practically ignored it. But it suffered a crash and was written off.
So I bought a D2....which is a much nicer car to drive, a bit roomier, but needed a constant stream of fixes in the last 12 months; water pump x2, roof liner, option B for the three little buggers, CDL activator (socket extension version), oil pump bolt, PS pump, new viscous fan bearing, tensioner x 2, coolant outlet, rebuilt headlight switch, injector harness, front drive shaft (cardin joint buggered), tc and diff seals...and there's probably more my memory has erased to ease the pain...
Done virtually everthing myself, learnt a lot, very satisfying most of the time and benefited enormously from this forum and chewed up a lot of weekends...!
When the water pump started leaking within 10k of replacement the car came within nano-seconds of being burnt ....even told my wife I wanted a Prado and my life back (shock!)....but the Disco survived because for some reason I like it (sad, I know, irrational...definitely):D
cheers willis
We should write a book of small stories I reckon 😃, then LR could pay us not to put it to print for fear of a drop in sales lmao!
And there are some very authoritative members of this forum who swear the D2 is no more unreliable than any other 4WD.
Who are they tryin to kid?
I have been let down three times that required long distance rescue and I spend heaps on keeping it serviceable as per Graeme Coopers advice
Last trip along the plenty hwy I met up with an ex LR lover that gave up after "another" remote breakdown that wrecked another holiday, he was driving a cruiser heading for the Canning solo.He passed us as we sat on the side of the road 300km east of Alice with a blown tranny cooler swage fitting waiting for the the tray truck
You need a passion for LR thats for sure,
I wish it was as reliable as The russian Yak52 plane I have a share in, that is one absolutely bullet proof piece of aviation machinery.

I thought about that the other day, when I was again under the D2, then I realised she is 12 years old, has done 290000km, and a lot of what I do is preventative.
So possibly if I did not read the forum I would just service her regularly and one day she would break and I would replace it. Instead I read the forum every night and think "Ooh better check that" climb under the D2 and replace something that possibly did not need replacing, and while doing that I think that I may as well replace all the corrugated tubes on the wires, and just tighten this or check that.
So not really sure if I spend so much time on the D2 because she really needs it or because I want to get her to 500k - just because I can.
I went on to the Nissan Patrol Forum, and looked at the section with cars in a similar age range to the D2's and it would appear that from the forum comments they have much the same problems, challenges etc. EXCEPT they seem to be an obnoxious bunch, so quite happy to have my D2 and this forum
I'll second that! In a previous life I was a member if the ford forums, in that life I was more interested in mods rather than maintenance etc but got on & had a look in the section I used to be part of which is the AU section so same age as my D2 & all the chatter has gone from mods to either selling or prevention measures. Similar issues with ABS blocks/valves & sensors etc, oil leaks, head gaskets & the list goes on. At least with the D2 you can roll under it any time u feel the need without having to drag out ramps or jacks & wheel stands!
I've questioned myself as to whether I've made the right call in the change from the Ford to the LR a thousand times & probably another thousand times from now. I've changed my driving style, gotten out of the right lane at traffic lights & just cruise along. Now I go skydiving for the adrenalin rush :)
More than happy with her, have seen other forums as previously stated detailing issues arising from poor maintenance to simple neglect. I dunno of any car that's free from "all" issues, bugs & failed components.
Well that's my bit, I'm off to fill up.....AGAIN! Lol
I get such a buzz from my series 3 Landy....trouble shooting, repairing and especially driving it!
Cheers, Mick
I've been on a few forums for different models, and they've all got their foibles. The Nissan ZD30 donk for one tended to blow up if you got one of the early ones (dipstick was the wrong length, I believe, so the generally ran low on oil!). The Navara forum I'm on tend to be a bunch of good people. Another forum I used to view, associated with a recently mentioned magazine, was a good one for abusive responses, so I stopped visiting :)
I don't know that I spend any more or less time on the Landy than the old Navara, but I now know it well enough that last holiday, when it started making a noise in the engine bay, I had it mentally diagnosed down to which hose in the turbo was likely to have a hole before I stopped and opened the bonnet to look. A fair bit of that is down to the people on this forum.:clap2:
I have spent the past 15 years doing maintenance on golf courses and I can tell you that on some of the up market ones, if you drop the F or C bomb or break a 4 iron on a tree they are likely to string you up.
I'm also a Musso, have a beautiful Maton sitting in the back room that hardly gets used these days now I have 3 Landys.
After 15 years in the trade, I also hate golf with a passion.
Some golfers get on my nerves these days too so I try to stay away from them now.
Yep, can't wait for Oakley (109 SIII) to be going, I still enjoy doing most of the preventitive stuff on Casper (D1 Tdi Auto) and I have had to do bugger all on Clio (D1 3.9 Auto Duel Fuel) but the irritating repairs are the ones which stop you from going away e.g. blowing a Transfer Case the day before we were to go on a high country 4wding trip or dropping and engine oil cooler hose on the driveway on our way to a family camping trip.
Both Casper but got around both of them and still went away.
It is a normal phenomenon for any mechanic, I've delt with it for my whole working life where some days you kick ass and other days are just ass and you achieve nothing at all or go backward.
I've learned to just reset and go at it again the next day, the only thing I can say is that you have to actually stop what your doing sometimes and re-evaluate before getting too frustrated and break more stuff.
I now normally just stop the troublesome job for a few mins or an hour and do some cleaning up (normally plenty to do when working on a Landy) while letting the brain take a rest and then go back and look at it, if I can't work out a solution then I may leave it for the following day (I'm Self employed so I have that luxury).
Normally the following day is always a bit better at least.
I have also considered writing that book:p
Cheers Casper
Walked in to my local auto shop today, and asked for an air filter.
The fellow grimaced, and shut his eyes as he asked, 'It's not for the Landy, is it?'
