I have a D2 TD5 1999, and before that had a D1 TDI300. The D1 I picked up at 140K and after a few niggles with the PS pump and brake vacuum pump (and door locks!) it was very reliable - my kids drove it and apart from oil changes over 6 years and 160K I practically ignored it. But it suffered a crash and was written off.
So I bought a D2....which is a much nicer car to drive, a bit roomier, but needed a constant stream of fixes in the last 12 months; water pump x2, roof liner, option B for the three little buggers, CDL activator (socket extension version), oil pump bolt, PS pump, new viscous fan bearing, tensioner x 2, coolant outlet, rebuilt headlight switch, injector harness, front drive shaft (cardin joint buggered), tc and diff seals...and there's probably more my memory has erased to ease the pain...
Done virtually everthing myself, learnt a lot, very satisfying most of the time and benefited enormously from this forum and chewed up a lot of weekends...!
When the water pump started leaking within 10k of replacement the car came within nano-seconds of being burnt....even told my wife I wanted a Prado and my life back (shock!)....but the Disco survived because for some reason I like it (sad, I know, irrational...definitely)
cheers willis
