Disco D2 TD5 Diesel Fuel economy

Trip over, back home in Vic now.
Update on economy.
We did have an iPad disaster (using that to keep records), but we only lost one set of figures.

To update the car
Stock Td5 on 18" road pattern Tyres. Auto trans
Engine has a lot of K's (358,000+ now), has had head done around 100,000 ago.
Genuine nudge bar, driving lights.
Loaded for two people for 10 days.
All driving done at the posted speed limits.

Melbourne - Adelaide - 10.54 L/100 km
Adelaide - Port Augusta. - 9.45 L/100 km (easy day just cruising)
Port Augusta - Coober Pedy (& drive around there for the day) 10.37 L/100 km
Coober Pedy - Erldunda. 11.07 L/100 km (headwind & speed up once in NT)
Erldunda - Erldunda - 10.58 L/100 km (Doing the touristy thing over a couple of days)
Erldunda - Coober Pedy - 10.83 L/100 km (See downhill comment previously)
Coober Pedy - Port Augusta - iPad disaster.
Port Augusta - Millicent via the Coorong - 10.42 L/100 km
Haven't filled since home but looking at tank level to km covered it will be mid 10's as well.

Have to note that the speed makes a huge difference.
To read into my results.
Mostly around 100 to 110 km/hr gives mid to high 10's
Keep it to 100 gives low to mid 10's
Tootling around drops it into the 9's
Over 110 gets into the 11 range

My D2a did the following.
Around town,11 to 12l/100
On a run at 100k's,9.5 to 10.5l/100
On a run at around 90k's,stuck behind traffic,etc,9 to 10l/100
All the above lightly loaded,two people,nothing on roof.

Heavily loaded,say a 4 week camping trip,nothing on roof,it didn't seem to use a lot more,maybe around .5l/100 more,at the most.

I once got 8.6l/100 on a long run stuck behind grey nomads pulling caravans.Average speed would have been around 80 to 85k's.In these type of conditions,i always try to keep in 4th locked up.
It seemed to use a lot of fuel going slow,with lots of stop start type of stuff on the farm,often around 15l/100 or more.

Generally i recon the D2 is pretty good on fuel.The D4 i have now is worse,generally
around 1 to 2 l/100 worse,at least,in the same conditions.A bit of a PITA,as it has a smaller tank than the D2.

The 3's and 4's do weigh a bit more--

I wouldn't have thought NW Tasmania would be the most economical part of Australia to drive around.
Then again I've never been to that part of Tassie.:angel:

True,but i still recon if the D2 is loaded to the same weight as an empty D4,the D2 would use less fuel.

Same as 300TDi D1,would use less fuel than the TD5 D2,if loaded to same weight.

So the trend seems to be they are getting more powerful,comfortable,etc,but also use more fuel.Even though engine technology has improved.But then again emission rules are getting tougher.

The 3l D4 may use slightly less in real use than the 2.7l,but i don't know.

The new 8 speed auto,and also if the newer models shed some weight,fuel usage should hopefully drop.

The early road tests indicated the Td5 had better consumption figures than the Tdi. A test of the Td5 auto published in October 1998 by Autocar found the Td5 did 3mpg better overall and 6mpg better on the test touring route.

For the record the Autorcar figures were:
Worst: 17.9mpg - 15.8L/100km
Best: 31.4mpg - 9L/100km
Touring: 31.4mpg - 9L/100km
Average: 26.6mpg - 10.6L/100km

Hmm, have noticed fuel consumption going up again recently, and having ruled out leaks and other issues, have decided it may well be the MAF. Was trying to remember when I last changed the MAF, and Mr Google found my post above.

Just over 2 years, is that as long as they last??????

Mate how do you work out the consumption? There is a certain way to get an accurate measure which I have caught a few posted info are wrongly calculated. Is a very surprise for me that you get 8.5l/100km, most new 4x4 truck with better technology achieved that result in recent years.

Either change the whole new block or just change the diaphragm. Much cheaper than the whole block plus EU2 & EU3 are different again.
