just an observation on ES's, the seem to have the woodgrain on the glove box, some also have woodgrain strip on the front door trims and others not? Must be different ES versions too?

Definitely a nice truck and everyone's given good advice! My question is price though. The dealer probably paid $10000 for it really and have spent maybe $1000 tarting it up so look really closely to see any blemishes missed by "buyers blindness". I bought my 10/04 D2a classic town, 6 months ago, with 170km, not leather, no SLS or ACE but it goes a dream and I laid $15000. It was a but cheaper cos the roof needs a respray really to make it a lot nicer and it's got a few scratches on it, but.... Owned by a middle aged bean counter from new who had ordered a disco 4 to replace it, and it had a full LR service history.

$15000 for my 10/04 vs $16999 for an 01 with those extra bits? You decide if the price is right for you. A dealer down the road from me wanted $26k for exactly the same truck as mine.

If 06/01 is the date dealer gave you, or you found on a body plate, it will be the compliance date not build date. The dealers tend to treat compliance as build date, when the actual build date will be at least a month earlier, possibly more. If you know the VIN someone can check the actual build date.

D2 production ceased in May '04 so it is absolutely impossible for a D2 to have a 10/04 build date. It will be compliance date, and with the 04MY D2's build date can be up to 11 months prior to compliance date.

The build date is located on a small plate in front of the airbox, that is front left of vehicle.compliance date is on panel sort of under brake booster ,right hand rear of engine bay.
Never listen to the seller when it comes to these dates, check them yourself.

Thanks to all for the great advice.
I checked the build myself from the rad panel infront of the airbox it's 06/01. The compliance plate says 10/01.
Crawled underneath checked trans case just above front prop shaft a little inboard just a flat blank area of the casting no nothing...

The plate with build date is possibly a 03/04MY feature. I've had a peek on mine (00MY) and no sign of a plate in that location. Although perhaps I should take another look?

It will be there my previous 99 D2 had in there too.
Between the airbox and radiator panel, stand next to the LF wheel and look forward.

I was looking in the wrong spot.

From the survey I ran (with admittedly low response) the latest reported build date with CDL internals was 09/04/2001 and the earliest without CDL internals 24/05/2001. Somewhere in the 6 1/2 week period between those two dates is the change over point. 06/01 definitely won't have CDL internals.

Went for a second test drive and look around noted the following
Engine sump leaking oil around gasket to the rear of the engine.
Driving at 100kph seems quiet no drive train backlash when easing off the go pedal.
    Transmission gear changes seem smooth
Transmission stall speed at 2700rpm holding the brakes and flooring it.
All dash lights illuminate self test prior to starting (no dash warning globes removed)
    No amigoes
Engine oil on the dipstick seems thick and black when cold no sights of coolant or fuel.
Coolant seems diluted red and a little mucky.
    Other fluid reservoirs all ok.
    Headlining needs replacing
    SLS disabled and coils fitted

I checked all I can. I suppose purchasing any unknown car as mechanical risks!

Wouldn't be a disco if it didn't leak there lol

They usually appear after driving for a while. Either way amigos shouldn't be something that would put you off because they can be fixed really cheap and every disco gets them sooner or later.

It's normal for diesel oils to go black quick. It's a good idea to do a service right after the purchase though.
