    It is a .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .....
Harmonic balancer for the diff. Don't ask me exactly what it does or how it works. When I asked the question last, all I got was smart alec responses from enlightened ones whom did not have an answer. Ha ha, mock you muthers, but there was no reasonable answer as to how a harmonic balancer actually works.
Is there anyone that can actually give an educated response??

    Cheers,

    Jason

DUH as i said. "Harmonic" = vibrations. "balancer" well high frequency vibrations you don't balance you just add mass to dampen or absorb, IE suck them up.

in simple terms is a hunk old cheep metal that's attached in such a way as to make vibrations not noticeable to the diver and occupants.
the same arrangement is found all over the place, motorbike handle bars for example.

its a vibration dampener it works by suspending a mass thats free to move (within limits) against something that can vibrate in ways that you dont want.

when the primary item starts to vibrate the mounting system for the weight (in this case a gearbox mount and a lump of steel) the inertia of the weight and the flexability of the mount absorb and remove some of the motion of the primary item.

So, let me get this straight (being uneducated and all): They have a problem with the rear diff that causes vibration. They fix it by mounting a big-ass yo-yo to it instead of balancing what-ever is causing it.

Nice... A little like chopping your finger off because it has a splinter, no?

    Cool to know.

    Cheers all.
