Unhappy Burning oil smell? Act now!

This is becoming a routine - last week the front propshaft, now the transfer gearbox!

You may know the distinctive smell of overheated gear oil, if not, it is distinctive from the usual motor-oil-meets-hot exhaust smell.
Must admit I did not act as soon as I should on this one.
Today I finally checked the TC oil level: about 500mls! (Should be close to 2 litres.) It was renewed 2 years ago, but we have done approx 50,000km with a lot of heavy towing since then. I have probably shortened the life of my TC considerably.

If your TC is not leaking as it "should" and you get a whiff of oil burn, check your level soon.

Think I will apply for the "Luckiest Landrover Owner Alive" award!

It is spread liberally accross Oz mainroads, beaches, tracks, mountains, deserts.... like Vegemite "a little spread goes a loooong way!"
And yes, I am a slacko for not checking the level more often.
"Fortunately" there are a few other leaks to ensure underbody rustproofing.
