have a close look at the carden joint, if you can "twist" it along its length at all then the center bearing is failing. if you can rotate it at all then the UJ's are failing.
I am working on a bit of a vibration from around 90 up to 110 kph. I have replaced the engine mounts with genuine and read all 302 posts in the ultimate guide to vibrations.
How much play should/may there be in the front bearing of the transfer case? A dial gauge mounted on the chassis shows me that I can move the prop shaft flange over 0.7 mm vertically but zero horizontally. The cardan joint feels a little bit loose but I cannot feel any actual play in it. Can anyone recommend a good shaft balancer in Adelaide?

When you "twist" do you mean "bend"?

I've got a TC in the shed which sounds similar, I thought it was front shaft then front diff, CV's etc etc until a mate was under it one day and grabbed hold of the front shaft and moved it up and down but mine was about 3mm not .7mm so out she came and the bearing is stuffed.
It was just before a big trip and I chucked a spare I had in the shed in which leaked but was quiet which fixed the vibration which was driving me nuts at anything over 90kmh.

Thanks Casper. Did you replace the box or just the bearing?
I am still unsure how much play is normal. We want to go down to Adelaide over Xmas and I don't have time to get parts and fix it before then. If the play is within normal limits, then I wil just go and fix it when I get back.
In relation to the carden, I cannot see or feel any play when I try to twist it nor when I try to bend it, but it does feel just a little bit looser than a single universal when I grab it and try to push it up or down or right or left.
