    Hot fuel filter?

I had a phone call from a chap this morning asking if the fuel filter near the rear wheel arch should be hot.

Not being a Td5 D2 owner, I had no idea so I couldn't answer him.

I had a look at RAVE and it seems fuel is returned from the cooler to the tank via the filter so I imagine it would get hot.

Looking at the diagram, I think you've nailed it. And I doubt very little, if any, of the hot fuel would get much further than the swirl pot.
Looking at this snap-shot the fuel is fairly hot (71*C) before it even enters the head. This was taken after a very short driving distance.

    Thanks Nobby.

That's pretty warm. Does the fuel cooler heat or cool the fuel?

    Hey Ron,

Yeah its a valid question and it "cools" the fuel to almost the same temp as the radiator that is supplying coolant to the fuel heat exchanger (Cooler)...

As the excess fuel is moved throughout the injection system, it is warmed by engine heat and returned back to the tank. It's not surprising that after a long run, the complete fuel tank can be 10,20+ degrees warmer than ambient.

Which is why I recommend to people down my way who are spending a day in the snow - don't get all carried away and hunt down winter diesel as you won't and don't need to pay the extra for just a day trip to sub-zero temps

our new hino has 2 radiator with protective heat screens in the return system[to stop you leaning on it].i saw one with a small fan.

the CAT grader come with a warning not to operate with low fuel due to heat in tank.

hilux fuel return cooler is next to gearbox.

I did consider calling it a warmer. But I guess the fuel gets pretty hot swimming about on top of the cylinders.
Maybe its more of a 'cooler than wot it wazza'.
