    Arrow D2 vs D2a TD5 intercoolers

I asked this question some time ago when I first joined and no one was able to answer. This afternoon I was working on a friends 2001 D2 (prefacelift) removing the EGR. I noticed the intercooler looked very narrow compared to that of my 2003 D2a (facelift model).

    D2 intercooler - approximately 25mm wide:

D2a intercooler - approximately 40mm wide (same length and depth):

There is no question in this thread. A while ago there was discussion on intercoolers and I asked Whether there was a difference between them. The answer to it is contained in my above post.

I've changed mine to the D2a update I/C. I believe it offers a 35% increase in cooling capacity. It does not offer massive gains in performance, but it is a noticeable difference and the car certainly pulls away better. All in I paid $100 for mine of Fleabay and I'm pretty happy with the result. I also fitted Terra Firma Silicone hoses whilst I had the I/C out. A Tombie remap and one of his I/C's is the ultimate enhancement but that will have to wait till finances improve.

The d2 I/c is write restrictive on air flow. I think you will find the air ducts to be much smaller

Bolting on an intercooler rarely makes any performance gains - a larger intercooler really just means you can change other things to make more power. Often people would find that fitting a larger intercooler would have negative effects on performance, the reason is that there is now a larger body of air to be compressed by the turbo, so the turbo has to work harder, but until you adjust the waste gate to suit you may find your boost pressures to be lower with the larger intercooler (but your potential maximum boost pressure levels are higher).

I am pretty sure the D2a also had slightly different ratings than the D2,increase in torque. It was not really noticeable. The intercooler would have helped, but there were also other changes as well.Power was the same.

I just thought it was a part of making the TD5 more emmisions friendly. thicker Intercooler, ECU mapping changes, higher injection pressures, more complex EGR and I'm not sure what else.

Thats lag related due to volume, the thicker intercooler should produce less pressure drop across it and flow better volume and pressure to the motor. I know one that has fitted only a larger intercooler to a TD5 and noticed the gains straight away. I had mine chipped and a larger intercooler fitted on consecutive days and I found the intercooler and chip felt like (infamous but highly sensitive bum dyno!) gave about the same gains each.

    'Coolers

    I'm fortunate to have a quite highly modified 02 D2 and a stock 04 'Classic' D2a.

I can't really compare the performance between them now as 1 is an auto (04) and the 02 is manual but the seat of the pants comparison from when the 02 was stock standard, has the 04 ahead of the 02 on stop-go traffic situations and outright grunt.......But I put that down to the benefits of the auto trans in traffic and the time taken to change gears in the manual.

However, out of the open road, the modified 02 will simply walk away from the 04 on a side by side acceleration test. I put this down to the benefits of an ECU remap, straight through exhaust, modified airbox and high flow filter and EGR removal

About the only thing not modified on the 02 is the intercooler and it is definitely on the 'must-have' list to complete the 2 year project on this car.

Once I install a larger 'cooler, I'll have lower EGT's and lower temperature and denser intake into the engine....which will increase the performance and 'drive-ability' of the car.

Given our good exchange rate against the GBP, I'll be ordering 1 of the larger coolers from the UK in the near future.

    Cheers!
