D2a TD5 Blown head gasket ++
Hi All,
Heading home from Brisbane last Monday and only got as far as the escarpment heading into Toowoomba. The beast died on the way up the hill - dumped oil/coolant etc on the ground and smoke under the bonnet.
Luckily I was almost at the top and there was room to get over to the left and stop. RACV/RACQ then stepped in and moved the rig (I was towing an 8x5 trailer) into town. Their diagnosis - head gasket at a minimum but could be more and they can't tell until they remove the head. It was going to take at least three days to fix with Australia Day in the middle and who knows what else that might also need fixing. Have to say I was impressed by the RACQ service guys - Garden City Mechanical and Service Centre - they were very helpful and no sign of BS.
RACV called. It seems I pay extra for their "Total Care" package so they wanted to discuss the options. If the vehicle was going to take longer than three days to fix they could get me rental and transport the vehicle home - over 1,500kms. If I wanted to get it repaired in Toowoomba they would cover the accommodation and provide a hire car for the duration.
I would have happily stayed in Toowoomba and had it repaired except: I didn't have the funds to cover anything more than the head gasket job, the D2 was loaded with 15 cases of my wine that I failed to sell at the Gold Coast Food and Wine Show and I didn't want the wine to cook if the sun came out (it has been bucketing down in SE Qld) and it's not raining in Victoria so I have to get home and get the pumps running before the vineyard dries out.
So, RACV got me a Ford Territory - big enough to load all my stuff - for a one-way rental to Bendigo and had the Disco and trailer loaded on a transport destined for Castlemaine. They also paid my accommodation in Toowoomba while all this was being sorted.
I hope to get home tonight and the Disco will follow in a couple of weeks. In the meantime I'll be driving our Disco 1 and selling a toy to cover the repair bill. (anyone want to buy a Triumph America or a Ducati Monster?)
If you see a cobalt blue D2a with Mount Alexander Winery on the side on a transporter in the next couple of weeks you now know the story.
RACV have been amazing. I joined and took out the higher level of cover before we took the D1 to the top of Cape York and have not thought about it since. I am so glad I just kept paying the bill.
Bill
ps Thanks in advance for all the offers to look after the wine. I might just take it back to our cellar door and see if I can sell it.

Glad to hear to got home and the RACV service was good. My wife had a disaster with them when our old Magna broke down in Daylesford, very little interest and she waited 3 hrs for the transporter to turn up. RACV were very poor communicators that day and did not keep her informed at all.
I had the HG on the V8 replaced by AMV in Ringwood, probably a bit far from you. 3 yrs on and still ok.

That is bad news about the Disco Bill. I too have used my RACV Totalcare and have nothing but praise for RACV. Once on a country road breakdown they wanted to send a taxi 80 kms to take me 3kms.
But mate. All that wine. You know you could have used the busted Disco as a marketing tool. Just stay road side with the bonnet lifted and a cardboard sign prominently displayed saying broken down, bulk wine at discount prices. Then proceeded to clear all the wine at twice the normal price.

Break down
Commiserations Bill and I hope the repair bill isn't to hefty!
Was planning to meet up with my mate who had a camper trailer in tow behind his D2 in the Vic highlands just after New Year. We are both Canberrans and he set off earlier than me to do the Xmas family thing in Melbourne and then head up to Ada River where we would RV for a night or two before heading up the ranges.
Unfortunately he blew an auto trans cooler hose just before the turn off to the camp site and ended up stranded on a back waters road about 10K from the camp site.........
Fortunately for him, I had decided against going over a very rough but significantly shorter track from McKillops bridge to Ada River after seeing how many trees had fallen across the track. This track would have brought me into Ada River from a completely opposite direction.
So I ended up taking a 150K detour and as we approached the turn off to the camp-site at about 16:30 .....who should we see parked in the middle of a small ocean of auto trans fluid was a very relieved mate and his equally relieved wife. Apparently we were the 1st car to come along in a hours
After getting them safely off the road, we disconnected both trailers and set up a small bivouac on a patch of grass. We had to back-track about 25-30K's to get in phone range and this is where RACV swung into action....
Really can't commend them enough for the prompt service and follow up phone calls to ensure everything was in place. This was in the midst of the short heat-wave in Victoria where it seemed, every car had broken down that weekend.
A local towing company was contacted by RACV and rang us while we were still in phone range to confirm our break-down location. They were flat out and as we were 6th job in line they promised to turn up "around 9ish the next morning".
We went back to our bivvy, set up camp and had an enjoyable night renewing our acquaintance with Jack Daniels.
At 09:01 the next morning, up turned a cheery but tired towie who'd been up since 1 that morning. He took over from there and we all ended up spening a few days in Orbost caravan park while the car was repaired.
Well done RACV - you've sold me on good service and efficient operations!

Hi all,
Finally home. I wrote my first post on this from Coonabarabran this morning.
Simon, you must have got them on a bad day. (i am assuming you had RACV membership not RAASA.). I couldn't believe how proactive they were.
Grumbles - good idea. I might load up the D1 (it makes me look even needier), park outside Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley and see if I can double my price there.
Catmatt, yep they're good. Your story reminded me of the time six month ago when my D2a dumped its transmission fluid. They had the Disco on a tray and delivered into Castlemaine within 90 minutes.
Tomorrow I return the Territory and start planning the repairs. First issue will be selecting a mechanic.

130,000ks
It is a d2a first registered Feb 2005 so must have been one of the last.
I bought it two years ago with 50k on the clock. Regularly serviced since then - although not always by a LR specialist.

Unfortunately no. I just read a couple of threads to see what an engine saver is. Now I know, it will be on the list - I plan to drive the D2 for at leat another 170k.
Unless of course Grumbles' plan for selling my product at exorbitant prices work, it which case it's D4 for me and Evoque for the leader of the opposition.

I commonly see this road side phenomena Bill with the fruit and veg car stalls etc. There is a constant turn over of cars stopping and purchasing their produce and they do it because they think they are getting it cheap or even at almost give away bargain prices. They are not. The road side prices are higher then the supermarkets but no-one does their homework or reflects on the prices.
I liken it to the auction syndrome where reason goes out the window and folk get into bidding wars and subsequently pay well above ordinary retail.
That D4 has got to be looking good right about now......
