My D2a has clocked over 298,000kms without a problem. However I did just replace all of the cooling system as I was seeing temps up to 107 degrees C and still rising on long uphill climbs. Temp gauge never moved.
Now it levels out at about 97 on the same climb.

Not the head gasket after all

    Hi all,

The Disco and trailer turned up on Feb 3rd and I directed it to my mechanic in Melbourne. I was with him when he had his first look under the bonnet. His view - not head gasket as there was still coolant in the reservoir and when he turned the engine over with the oil filler cap off it was blowing smoke signals. He said it was a sign of a burned out/ melted (can't remember the exact words) piston caused by injector spitting the fuel in one place.

I told him I a not in a hurry - I am relying on the D1 at the moment and have got the highway fuel consumption down to 16.4l/100kms. Removing the roof rack and awning and changing from muddies back to all terrains have given me 4l/100kms improvement.

He removed the head this week and confirmed the piston is burned out. He is now looking at options for me.

    Hi
I'd like to get some shots of the blown piston but the vehicle is in Melbourne and I am 140kms away. If I get a chance to go down there next week I will take a camera.

Anyone know what would have caused this?

    Crook injector is my guess.

It's overfueled that cylinder raising the combustion temps miles too high.

    Hi all,

Got the D2 back last week - I put a hold on the repairs through March and April because I didn't want to think about it during harvest and vintage. We went through the options in April: second hand motor, rebuild or new motor.

Since I plan to keep the D2 for at least 2 to 3 years and can't afford any more disruptions I opted for the brand new motor. I figured that the real difference in cost was only about $3,000 and that was money well spent on peace of mind. In the process I had all 5 injectors inspected and had to replace 2 - at least one of those was the source of the burned out piston. Total cost of the job was a little over $14k.

I now have a 2004 TD5 Disco, first registered in Feb 2005, with 135,000kms on the clock and a new motor under the bonnet. I have to keep reminding myself of that because several people have pointed out that for that money I could have bought a pretty good D2, but I have a pristine example of one of the last of the range with a brand new motor.

So glad to be able to relegate the D1 V8 to back up duties. I have been doing over 1,000kms per week and rarely see better than 18.5l/100kms.

    Oops, what's that noise?

I have been tardy and not updated this thread. Last I posted, in early July, I had the D2a with new TD5 and life was good. FOR 1,000KMS!! Then I noticed a strange knocking noise over 3,000rpm. Don't often need to rev the motor at that level so it would only kick in occasionally.

My mechanic was overseas so I parked up the D2a and dusted off the D1, yet again. Couple of weeks later, 10 minutes drive and he had heard the noise and identified it as an issue that needed investigation. He gave me 99 D2 V8 on gas to drive while they identified the problem.

A week later the problem was identified as a cracked head. Since I had paid for a brand new motor, a repair job was not acceptable. Thankfully ULR didn't quibble and agreed to supply and fit another motor.

Got it back last week and she is driving like a new D2a TD5 (funny that) although I have yet to reach the magic 1,000kms mark.

The good points - Barry Deacon from Deacon Automotive has been terrific throughout the process. I put 11,000ks on the loaner which was a great drive - only downside to the loaner was a small gas tank such that I was filling it three times in some week. ULR acted honourably - if there were any issues, Barry sorted them out and I didn't hear about them.

The bad points - two replacement motors in one year!!! Surely I have had my share by now.

At least I am now the proud owner of a very nice 7 year old Disco with a brand new motor.
