Ashcroft Transmissions
Hi we have an 01 Discovery Td5 manual, use it offroad a bit, but we put a little linkage underneath to engage the difflock to use in sand, however when in muddy areas this can be a horrible task getting under the car, to engage it, i saw on a site called DiscoveryTd5 a few years ago that they make the lever kit to put in cab in place of the standard transfer case lever, however this guy has ceased production, does anyone know where you can buy the kit, or am i better off seeking one from a wrecked 04 MY.
Thanks
Will

I installed an Ashcrofts CDL approx 18 months ago due to the fact that it was hard to get a second hand one locally, and when I did find one the wreckers wanted stupid money for them, TRS at that time quoted me either $600 or $800 I cannot remember exactly the amount but I laughed when they gave me the price.
As I had looked for some time I got the Ashcrofts one from the UK around $400landed to my door. Same as factory one, has been fantastic.
Cheers
I was quoted $900 from TRS when I was looking at them, and that was a used item!
That's when I decided to make my own.....
$20 or so, doesn't look quite as neat, but does the same job.
I'm not too worried about looks.
Looks like the Ashcroft is the go then, thanks all
The Ashcroft, DiscoveryTD5.com and polish levers are all variations on the same design. None of the them are the same as the factory lever.
The Ashcroft and the other two copies of it have an open back whereas the factory lever has a closed cast alloy back. The effect of this is that the Ashcroft and clones are open into the transmission tunnel, and really require the fabrication of an additional gasket to prevent entry of dust and water. Noise levels in the the cabin also increase slightly but noticeably.
The factory lever does not suffer either of these problem due to it's closed design.
As far as the cable actuated shift levers go the factory item is the best, providing money isn't an obstacle. The Ashcroft and clones are very good but the open back is a downside that you need to be aware of.
FWIW I have one of the discoverytd5.com levers and it works very well (being an out and out copy of the Ashcroft), but I'd definitely buy a factory lever if I could find one at the right price, mainly to avoid the additional cabin noise and dust/water entry.
This is a pic of the factory lever:

i have a 00 and put a series 1 lever in, they do fit as they bolt to the top of the box. Worked very well, downside was where the series 2 lever bolts to the tunnel plate the series 1 needs this plate changed to allow for flex. I managed to seal it from water and dust very well but noise level was louder, I lived with that. I was lucky and came across a 2nd hand series 2 update for next to nothing out in the bush, so that went in.
Long story short, I still have the series 1 levers if you are interested, call me on 0457077405, you can have them to fiddle with I am at Baulkham Hills.

Thanks Paul, interesting information. I have not noticed any increase in noise with the ashcrofts installed, definately no change from my end. The noticeable difference is heat coming through the transmission tunnel, auto gear lever, trifecta case lever and rubber matting you can really feel the heat come through. But then still very happy with the ashcrofts as it functions the same and looks the same as factory.
Cheers
