Question A few gremlins (wipers clunky, steering vibration)

    Hi all,
Oookay, I have a bit of an interesting one here and no idea if anyone can help, suggest anything so here goes....

With the recent downpour in Melbourne, and traveling more k's than normal with the school run.... have noticed (annoyingly).... that when I have my wipers on (front) that they 'clunk' quite loudly.

The clunk is noticeable when they have fully reached to the left and/or right. As I am the driver I have no idea if the passenger side is the same but strangely enough, when the wipers move to either side and before they go the other way, I can also feel a clunk through the accelerator pedal (which may just be the vibration from the windscreen travelling down ??)...altho must note that I don't feel the same clunk through the clutch pedal if I am changing a gear...

.... is there any way to adjust the wiper blades so they don't go so far to the left or right and see if that stops the clunk? In the 3.6 years I've owned Lp this is a first for me its done the clunk.

Also, when I mention 'clunk' it was enough for me to hear it over the radio as well as feel it through the accelerator pedal...

I've also noticed that the steering wheel vibrates (shudders) at between 60-80k's when getting the rev's and acceleration up. I did mention to my mechanic when I got it back and after I drove it that the steering felt lighter...

I had a new clutch kit put in some weeks ago (by mechanic) and not being mechanically minded have no knowledge about what gets adjusted where and if any of these are related or not.

Appreciate the reply... (hope it makes sense)

    Thanks,

    Lp

(btw I have a list of gremlins )

    shudder first--
    run over anything lately?
    gutters, bricks, FJ40's?

tyres still have plenty of tread, and more importantly, still round?
hmm, what sort of tyre pressure?
I wonder if the mech overinflated them?

V8's dont tend to vibrate much.

Regarding the wiper problem ... have the wiper blades been changed recently. My wife's car was serviced and they replaced the wiper inserts with a cheap plastic backed version that clunked badly when changing direction. Replaced the inserts, problem cured.

The wiper blades can also wear over time and be very clunky when they change direction. Collected a new car recently and was amazed how quiet the wipers were compared to my old car (same model) that the wife was now driving. Fitted new wiper blades (rather than just inserts) and the wipers were nearly as quiet as the new car.

between receiving it back and taking it for a drive, no gutters. More than enough tread and tyre pressure should be as per the sticker on the door - and they look round to me . (no idea if they have been over inflated or whether the mechanic would have even done that??)... and no FJ40's run over either

....having said the above though, I have just done a walk around after inspecting the tyres etc and notice the the front passenger side is missing one of the balancing weights, so perhaps that may be the problem?? I tried to see if there were any marks on the rim from where one may had been put but can't with all the wonderful road grime and to be honest, last time I washed Lp (month ago) cant remember whether it was there or not! ...

The driver side balancing weight is about 10mm or 15mm in width so quite small in comparison to the rear ones, easy enough to not see or take notice of....

Do you think the missing weight balancer (assuming there was one on the passenger front) may be causing the vibration due to it not being there now?

    Thanks,
    Lp

The wiper "blades" were changed when I bought the car from the dealer. No idea what type/brand they put on there. There hasn't really been much rain in melbourne over the last three years nor of me needing to drive it much in that weather either, so it's not like they have got alot of use... however... what is the life expectancy of wiper blades?

When you mention the inserts - what do you mean? What's the difference between the two (blades)?

Can the blades be purchased from the likes of supercheap/autobarn etc and if so, any particular brand out there that folk can recommend please (I think they make lots of different compound ones now?)

    Thanks,
    Lp

    Strong maybe to yes.

Re the wipers. New complete wipers ( rubbe rplus the steel/plastic bits) are about $20 or so each to replace everything bar the arm. go to Supercheap or whereever and they will probably even fit them for you. I can attest that the difference is amazing as I replaced mine a couple of months ago.
