    Transmission Fault Lights

    Good evening all.

I went 4WDriving today and got caught out in a mud hole that was deeper than I expected. Water leaked into the Disco and when I finally got snatched out the car stalled after a few minutes. The "M" and "S" lights came on and every time I shifted into drive or reverse the Disco stalled. After about 10 or so minutes the lights went out and I had drive and reverse again. Then the lights started flashing on and off at different intervals and the transmission was shifting up and down and finally will now only go into 3rd and reverse.

I drove to a friends place and he hooked up his Nanocom and there was no reading for the Automatic Transmission Controller. I took it out of the car and it was wet and there was water in the plug. The CPU appears to be a sealed unit and I also blew air into the plug to get the remaining water out. Will the CPU be fried, or will it be OK once the plug is dry? I am very surprised that the door seals have small gaps in them to allow water into the vehicle.

    Regards,

    Peter

I had a simmilar incident a few years back

I sprayed CRC contact spray into the Auto Computer and let it dry out infront of the heater.
Repeated the process a few times till the spray washed out clean.

    No issuss to date
    Some havn't been so lucky.

I haved moved it to under the console and sealed the doors too.
Threads are in project area if you want a look.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Hi Alien D2.

The controller appears to be sealed. Where to you actually spray the CRC into? Would isopropyl alcohol be a better product to use? Was it hard to move under the console considering the huge wiring loom? I will definitely be looking at sealing the doors.

    Regards,

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Isopropyl Alcohol would be an option if you can crack open the ECU case. It's commonly used for cleaning solder resin from pcbs.

If you can get the PCB out of the case I'd use a soft tooth brush in combination with the Isopropyl to gently scrub the board clean if there was any evidence of water inside the case.

If you are just spraying the connectors I'd stick with using contact cleaner.

    cheers
    Paul

    Peter,

The slits in the door rubbers are a well documented issue. Get some Neutral Cure Silicone and some flyscreen spline. Short length of spiline in each slit, silicone over the top and your water ingress issues are mostly solved.

Whilst on the subject of water, make sure you remeove the aircon drain nipples and extend the drain tubes with some vacuum hose - will prevent issues with the XYZ switch down the line.

Hope your control unit works without further intervention.

    Cheers,

    Franz

    Transmission ECU working again

    Hi All.

Just a quick update to let you know that I allowed the transmission ECU and the plug under the passenger seat to dry for the last couple of days. I refitted the ECU this evening and the Disco drives and changes gears and goes into Sport and Manual mode as it should. So it appears that no damage was done.

I am going to fix the gaps in the door seals and see if I can mount the ECU under the console so that this does not happen again. Thanks for your help on Wednesday OffTrack and thanks for your advice alien d2 and Franz.

I still cannot comprehend what Land Rover was thinking when they mounted the ECU under the seat and then left gaps in the door seals so that water can enter the cabin. Surely someone must have told the engineers that water and electronics don't mix.

    Regards,

    Peter

Probably the wading depth specified in the owners manual which incidentally is to the centreline of the axle.....

You will find that the doors become harder to close when you seal up the slits in the door rubbers - this leads me to believe that this may be the reason.

Another irritant for me was the amount of dust entering the vehicle and I tracked this down to a vent behind the RHR bin. This has flaps on it and releases the air when doors are closed. I have all but blocked this off and get nowhere near as much dust in. Only downside is you have to be forceful when slamming the doors!

    Cheers,

    Franz
