prob with d2 td5 smoke from alternator

    HELP needed asap
mate was driving d2 dt5 all ok then in about 10-15seconds smoke started coming from under bonnet and three amigos came on. lifted up bonnet and smoke was coming from alternator. turned car off, waited couple minutes, nothing unusual on first look, but car now wont power up. my first thought was voltage regulator on alternator put out too high a voltage or amperage and stuffed battery, and/or wire from alternator to battery. any ideas
also i i provide an external power to my nanocom 1 and plug it in will i be able to get any info from the ecu or does the car need power, to access download fault codes.

Lip seal on vaccum pump giving up & engine oil flooding alternator?

Yes ECU needs power to work. Start by replacing battery.
