    Economical lift

    2000 Disco td5 sls ace auto

    My front springs were tired, bottoming out over sand drifts etc, and I suspected the front lower shock bushes were worn. Perfect time to do a lift!
    The whole 2" shebang seemed too pricey and complicated, so I opted for Dobinson +20mm front springs, and a 40mm sensor kit from Les Richmond Automotive.

    Just finished the job. The front lower shock bushes were in need of replacement, so I attended to them while replacing the front springs.
    This made the front noticeably higher than the rear, before installing the rear sensor kit.

    With the rear sensor kit installed, (on the lower of the two options), the car sits beautifully, and appears to be about 1 1/2" higher than standard. There is plenty of clearance between the front drive shaft and cross member, and the brake lines and sensor leads appear unstreached. All in all a cheap and effective raise, with noticeable improved ride offroad.

    In retrospect, I would have made up the rear sensor kit myself if I had known how simple they are, and saved seventy odd bucks in the process. Not that I am a complete tightwad, just that one must save the pennies for other things when one is a td5 owner! (Other things lare lurking just around the corner...!)

    Food for thought with your lift.

    With the 40mm sensor adjustment brackets, If you haven't put 40mm spacers under your SLS bags you are effectively running your bags in off road mode all the time, and then when you select off road mode you are over extending your SLS by 40mm.

    From this forum the figures for standard space between rear Axle and bumpstops with SLS is 60mm and 100mm in off road mode.

    I did what you have done but placed 40mm spacers under the bags to avoid over extension when in off road mode.(UK supplier)

    then there is the issue of potentially topping out the rear shocks, which if standard only extend to 570mm. If you raise the rear 40mm without extended shocks it is an issue. I fitted the bilstien 995's which extend out to 615mm (specially designed for D2 SLS with the extra 45mm to accomodate a 40mm lift).

    Any lift greater than 40mm in the front will require a modification to the crossmember to gaurantee to stop it touching the front drive shaft at full suspension travel. did you check yours at full travel?

    My motto is cheap is expensive! every time i have gone cheap on things its been a mistake.

    Thanks, Alpick, for your detailed advice. I'll order the spacers and rear shocks, and check the front shaft at full travel. What front shocks did you use?

    To avoid topping out the standard shock I went with the bilstien 994's, again extended travel to take advantage of the lift at the front (mine was only about 30mm from standard after spring replacement but the cross member comes mighty close at full extension so I am fitting the LRA cross member kit that rotates the cross bar, increases shaft clearance but does not reduce ground clearance).

    From an earlier post

    just some info re the 994/995 bilstein shocks v stock heights mentioned earlier.

    The "standard LR shock on SLS rear is 570/360. open/closed"


    But when the sls is let down to the bumpstops the shock only closes to 420! I measured it.


    the "extended" BE5B994 (front) are 618/388 and

    BE5B995 (rear) are 615/390.5mm ,
    opened/closed respectively.

    so in the extended
    bilsteins there appears to be enough extension for a 40mm lift of the sls. and they close enough for the 420mmm physical down limit

    (According to the counter guy at heasmans in sydney (yesterday) the billy 994/5 is their part number, they developed the shocks specifically for a 40mm lifted sls D2 that is still capable of using off road mode height?)


    (If stock 570mm top out handles off road mode height, 618mm in the billies should handle 40mm lift and off road mode right?)


    I have an ARB bar and winch and fitted the dobinson C51-032 springs which gave a hub centre to fender measure of 525mm at the front, should settle to about 520mm. ( I tried the C51-42 but they gave 545mm hub to fender)


    When i pump up the sls to give a 85mm bumpstop clearance (25mm lift) the car sits about level, just above the "stock slight nose down attitude".


    I aim to put in a 25mm lift spacer under the sls.


    so the bilstein/dobinson combo is good for improved ride (still soft but firm and way less body roll) and small lift if you dont want to get involved with longer brake/ABS lines and crossbar spacers etc.

    A search of "bilstein 995" gives heaps of info I used on researching a cheap lift , (no such thing i reckon!).

    I am very happy with the dobinson/bilstein combo but the ride is a lot stiffer than standard, more of any bump is transmitted to the body with the biltein shocks stiffness compared to standard shock.

    Generally, it's best not to skimp out on this stuff, can just lead to issues later on. You've got a few issues now in that you seem to be running standard length shockies with longer springs - you would want longer length shockies to suit. You haven't spaced the rear air bags, meaning they're running inflated more than they were originally designed for, especially when in offroad height mode. Have you spaced your front chasis cross bar - as the front prop shaft is likely to contact this after being lifted. You also might want to look at longer brake lines, bump stops and ABS sensor wires - I did all that with my lift to prevent possible issues later on (but I have a 4" lift).
