    How do you replace/ fix this....pic to explain

    Hey All,

    Me again.......please see pic below of Smokey



    Now next to the windscreen.....on the outside pillar....drivers side is a a black plastic covering....technical name to moi...unknown . Anyhoo once I get over 80-100kms it makes a rattling sound. Had a wiggle of it and it moves quite freely.

    So I spoke to my local LR mechanic when I put Smokey in for a service recently and was told they don't do it...to fiddly/ time consuming etc.....go and see a panel beater?? Is this the case with this part or what are the alternatives....I hope this all makes sense,

    surely a few spots of urethane sealant under/on it would shut it up...

    Yep these get broken when windscreen is replaced with a heavy hand. I used a bit of sikaflex to glue it down.. Worked a treat

    Gday Stevo,

    If its the piece I am thinking of, they are held on by 3 metal clips, and the lugs on the black plastic trim break and the trim moves. You can get them and easy to replace, but you have to buy the trim piece. I used some glass selant when mine went the first time, but our canning trip rattles it loose and ended up getting a used set from TRS in SA.

    I also had the one's that sit behind the rear doors do the same, they are pretty flimsy lugs that hold them on.

    My passenger one went the same, pulled it off - it's still off!
    No noticeable difference in noise, and I really don't do "cosmetically pleasing", so it'll stay off for as long as it takes me to be bothered (see: afford!) to get some new ones!

    And the one behind the rear passenger side door flaps around also. Again, it'll get done one day!

    Thanks for all the feedback....just to ensure......this is the part and the movement ( yes I used to do hand modelling)





    So these glues some of you speak of ( I am pretty glueless..snicker snicker).....can get from Bunnings or the like? If windscreen needed changing would that affect getting it off? Also any idea what the part maybe called? Thanks again for the feedback,

    I'd be telling the dealer I'm the one with the ****ing money and I want to spend it. Clearly you're not interested so not only will you not get paid for this service but I won't be back spending any more here either.

    See how quickly he changes, best done in front of a service dept full of customers at around 8am, prime drop off time.

    Stevo its part of the windsceen shroud, there should also be the piece that the wipers fit thru, and some thin rubber strip across the top from memory.
    I think there are 2 studs on the door side and then 3 clips on the bonnet side to get it off.( behind the plastic strip )
    I just used selley all clear silicon from bunnings, but it doesn't hold forever. You wont be changing the windscreen ( I assume ) so does it matter

    I had to replace mine a couple of years ago after a windscreen change broke the plastic lugs and it whistled when over 80kph. New replacement was about $80 - $90 from Karcraft from memory. I can't help but think that trying to whoppy it up will look very ugly unless you're an artisan.

    There are 3 plugs on the inside of the door opening with centre pins that have to be pushed in or pulled out so the plug can be removed. If you push them in you can easily lose them down the A pillar. Karcraft sold me a set of replacement plugs which I would recommend getting if you are going to replace it. Putting the side strips back on is (well at least on mine it was) very difficult. To hold it down so it doesn't rattle, the strip is sort of a long spring clip. Its hard to align the plastic lugs on the side strip over the clips on A pillar edges and you need strong wrists. Don't push the strip all the way down until you are sure the plastic lugs are all aligned else, as has been mentioned, you break the lugs on the strip when you try to remove. If you have to remove, I found it best to slip a lever under the sidestrip next to the windscreen and try to lever the metal clips off rather than extract the plastic lugs out of the clips.
