    Endless air

    Hi guys,

Has anyone fitted an air compressor into their D2? I want to but aren't sure the best place to do it. I did think of using the rack under the car that is used for the SLS compressor but thought it'd be better somewhere clean and dry.

    Any comments?

I'm interested as well. Putting the finishing touches to my dual battery system now and I'm turning my attention to the next accessories.

What compressor are you looking at? I'm thinking of the ABR sidewinder at around $200.

hi guys, i have a d2 and have a fair sized air system on it.
i have a boss 170l per minute 100% duty cycle compressor mounted between the abs unit and the firewall, had to remove horn for the alarm to make the room. and an 18ish litre tank under the drivers side sill, with a nitto style outlet mounted in the rear bar, it take about 5 mins to pump the tank up to 130psi. but it does make pumping tyres up as fast as any sevice station till about halfway through the 3rd when air pressure starts to lag. but ive found my setup beats any of my friends and they all want to use mine. lol
all my pipe work is a bit rough till i get access to a hoist and fit a copper system in it, just to avoid poly pipng bursting from heat and getting torn by sticks and what not. also i have an arb locker up front which requires no more than 90psi, so a simple filter reg under the drivers seat solves the pressure difference. the horn also runs off the air, which certainly gets heard with a truck horn with 130psi up its bum.
ill have to check up on the price of the compressor as i forget, but it does have a pretty serious draw on power (60A on startup)
and the airank was $70 from a local truck wreckers
    hope my rambling helps

I haven't really started working out what compressor to get yet as I've only just realised I'll be doing it. I owned a TJM one we paid $300 for but it was 50/50 with my brother in law, and now we both have 4 wds he's going to keep the tjm and I'll try and get an endless air/mounted one rather than portable one. Will start researching which one I get now.

I recently put an ARB one under the passenger seat. It fits perfectly and makes inflating tyres a doddle. I would be surprised if it was that much slower than a servo pump. Though I havent yet inflated from flat, just the usual reinflate from 18 to 34 psi.
Of all the accesories ive fitted this one really makes life easier for a bit of fun on the tracks, then a quick stop to re-inflate and away i go.
I dont know why I didnt do it earlier.

Isn't an endless air an aux' belt drive unit mounted in the engine bay inline with the existing belt and only runs when the engine is running ? ...

... where on earth are you going to put another compressor (like the A/C compressor) ... there's no room in a D2 engine bay.

Endless air is probably just my way of defining an inboard permanently mounted compressor. I didn't think there was enough room either that's why I'm seeing what everyone else has done.

Endless Air is a brand, not a generic term. The site is broken but see Index of /.

I hard mounted a Bushranger Black Max in the rear of my D2 1.5 weeks ago in preparation for a driving trip that covered the 4 Victorian "desert" national parks.

    Red Gum Swamp.jpg

The compressor is mounted into the space between the rear of storage bin and the tail light mounting location on the passenger side. I had already run 8 b&s twin core back to the power socket in the cargo area to power the fridge so a fair chunk of the job had already been done.

Unfortunately I was pressed for time so no pics with the storage bin removed - I was trying to finish the job on Saturday, with a planned departure early the following morning.

I ended up stripping the Black Max compressor to a bare unit, and was left with a box of junk.

    Compressor debris.jpg

Things didn't go exactly as planned. I had intended using the original outlet barb from the Black Max but it turned out to be a pipe fitting rather than 1/4" NPT thread. In the end I had to replace the original hose fittings with 1/4" NPT threaded Nitto fittings.

While the right angle 1/4" NPT male to female adapter works very well, there is no clearance between the outlet barb and the plastic vent cover. I'll try turn off some of the thread from the barb next time I'm at my brothers place. If I was doing the install again I'd be tempted to use a stainless leader hose and find a location to panel mount the barb.

I've mounted the power switch next to an additional 12V outlet below the vent location. The 12V socket was put in last year, so the switch location is a bit of a compromise.

I'm very glad I went to the trouble of hard mounting as it substantially reduces the hassle of reinflating. I was finding the whole pop the bonnet, attach battery clips routine a PITA, and it was getting hard to squeeze the pump into the storage bins.

    cheers
    Paul

Thanks for all that info, exactly what I was after. I have my dual battery system on the passenger side bin so theres no reason I couldn't do what you've done on the drivers side bin.

Can i ask a few questions?
Where did you get the compressor from?
Did you just run the cabling from the cable already in the back of the car? So I'd just connect it to the dual battery system then?
Did you just bolt it to the floor ?
Your comments on the outlet socket, are you saying you'll run a short tube/ pipe from the compressor to an outlet socket outside the bin (or car) to plug the actual hose into?
This is a typical compressor vs one with a "tank" that fills with air like a tradie compressor isn't it?
How did it go on your desert trip? I see your pics and guess you would have done some of "the border track?" it's our favorite destination for some simple and challenging stuff!

Any more info would be great! Thanks!

    Hi Barney,

I bought a Bushranger Black Max from ebay - the seller is an air suspension mob based in Melbourne.

Air Ride Suspension Supplies - Air Ride Suspension Supplies - Air Suspensions Systems and Auto Electrical Products for Rods, Customs and Classics

The compressor is one of these:
    Black Max Compressor - Bushranger

The pump comes with hard mounting grommets and bolts which replace the sand tray. I made a mounting plate that attaches to the bracing rail that runs behind the bins. The plate is attached by two large pop rivets and the lower mounting bolts of the pump.

The other mod to the BlackMax was removing the existing power switch and plastic cover and extending the wires to the new switch location.

I have a 8 b&s twin cable run from the dual battery to a Baintech fuse box mounted in behind the front end of the cargo bin. From there I have 8b&s cabling to the compressor.

The stainless leader hoses are these things:
    Stainless Steel Braided Hoses

It gives you a bit more flexibility in mounting the outlet.

I really can't answer on the advantages or otherwise of a tank system, but yes it is like a tradies compressed air set up.

Just got back today from a week away. It was primarily a birdwatching trip looking for Mallee specialists. The trip was via Hattah Kulkyne, Murray Sunset (South Settlement Trk, Pheeny's Tk, and Milliwa South Bore Tk), then across to Underbool and down through Wyperfeld via Gunners Tk and around Wirregren Plains Tk and then down to Wonga Campground via Moonah, Eagle and Dattuck Tks. Also did a short trip along Purra Tk around the back of Lake Albacutya. So a fair bit of soft sand Spent the last couple of days at Little Desert looking for Elegant and Blue winged parrots and Malleefowl, and only did a bit of sand driving - out to Red Gum Swamp then back up the Old Nhill Rd and Phillips Tk.
