Check the guide pins on your brake calipers, I had one dry out and seize, which left the brake pad resting on the disc, causing an intermittent grind/squeak- you mentioned it sounds like metal on metal. I replaced pins and one carrier, problem solved. Was quite a grinding sound though, not really a chirp...

Not so much the manifold at the head location, but the three bolts at each flanged joint at the down pipes (see the red circle locations). They tend to work themselves loose.

If they ARE loose, use some spring washers. Worked a treat for me and a few others.

Let us know how you go?

    Cheers,

Hi RedTD5 any update on this problem? Am sufferring what sounds like a similiar whistle/squeak. Propshaft has been checked and noted as sound & engine mounts have just been replaced.

Hi all, I have the exact same chirping sound emanating from the rear left as described. I have not checked any of the suggestions mentioned here but I am in need of a brake job and I was getting the idea that it is a kind of sensor 'chirp' as it is kind of electronic in nature.
I will be replacing the rotors, pads and brake wear sensor soon and I will report if the sound has gone away.

    Cheers.

While the symptoms do sound like the front driveshaft and a leaking manifold. I have twice now had a similar situation where the cause turned out to be the EGR solonoid mounted on the RH front inner guard.

Was a devil to find the first time, and knew what I was looking for the second. Now I just run with the plug disconnected.

    Cheers Phil

Mine has recently developed a chirp which sounds like a cricket - but it only does it under brakes after the d2 has been for a long run in the wet. The chirp remains the same speed as road speed decreases, but does increase in loudness as you increase pressure on the brake pedal which makes it probably related to brake pipes or modulator. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. I've had a look and can't see any obvious rub points, and I'm stumped as to what is causing it to happen in the wet only.

The only thing I can that looks even remotely possible is the rubber mounting bushes on the ABS Modulator seem to be fairly worn and the modulator can slop around on the mounts.

    Cool re random chirping noise

I to have a randon noise it usually comes when travelling quite slow but occasionally around 70k nor so if you get on some corrugation,,,I have put it down to the anti lock braking as it is the same sound that comes when in low range and the traction control is doing its thing....peter
