    Smile Rumbling thru car!

    Ok,
I posted here earlier regarding rumbling sound in my Disco 2 V8, 2000. 250k's
Since then I have fitted the following:
New springs front and rear 2" lift.
New rotex coupling to rear shaft.
    New shocks front and rear.
New spring isolators front and rear.
    Still the rumbling persists!!
I thought maybe front double cardan at fault?
Removed and took for a drive with centre diff lock engaged.
(fitted Ashcroft CDL cable assy as well, awesome bit of gear! Well worth the effort, looks very neat when finished. Not as easy as the video on their web page implies but doable!)
    Any way I have digressed.....
    Vibration rumbling is worse!!
Does that mean transfer on the way out? Maybe rear output bearing as the noise is constant at highway speeds.
I will refit front shaft when parts arrive, remove rear shaft, see what happens.
I have engaged CDL before removing front shaft no change!
This rumbling noise is annoying is driving me crazy.
    Any gurus out there?

with the lift have you checked that the cross member is not interfering with the prop shafts. Some people have put spacers on the cross members to lower them. There's a thread somewhere where they modified the crossmember by cutting and welding a notch out of them

I had extreme rumbling in a 98 Defender. I replaced the rear axles and drive flanges and it went away.

Rumbling is often wheel bearings. Rear hubs on D2's are easy to change as full assemblies from a wrecker, that's what I did for one customer.

If it is the front prop shaft then I would recommend the spacers, LRA have an angled spacer where you don't lose any clearance as it angles backwards. I would say to get a 6 point impact socket as those buggers are pretty stubborn, I also bought a cheap heat gun from bunnings in case but I didn't need it. Good luck.

    Cool Rumbling

    Hadn't considered hubs yet.
Definitely not the front shaft, that cleared easily after fitting lift kit.
Front shaft is off noise is worse.
Just driven a couple of k's on rear shaft and it has nearly totaled the rear rubber coupling? It's only fitted last month.(genuine from uk not eBay)
    Confused now.
I might check hubs while I ponder what to do with the transfer case!
I hate it when everyone says don't buy a Landrover, "there trouble!!", and so far they are proving to be spot on.
It's a great car but the purchase price is rapidly being equalled by parts purchased...
Lucky I'm a fitter and can do it myself, no labour charges!

I have exact same symptoms. I have dropped both drive shafts, (obviously one at a time), and while the front makes no difference, the back does reduce it to "almost" nothing. I therefore suspect it is a case of the rear shaft transmitting the vibrations from elsewhere, through its length, and because it is so much longer, exacerbating it. This leaves me thinking either the flexi coupling, rear diff, or some sort of backlashish thing in the transfer case. The vibration is wheel speed related, not engine speed. It is consistent regardless of gear, or acceleration/deceleration. I cannot feel any play in the wheel bearings. Perhaps we have to try one thing each, log it, and see how we go.

    cheers
    Nick

    rumbling

    Hi

are you getting much vibration with the rumbling? i would be converting from the rotorflex coupling to a shaft out of an early disco or rangie. pretty easy job

    Rumbling

I have the car up on stands.
Transfer case very clunky fair bit of backlash. Still think bearings in transfer maybe dodgy. Some movement in front output flange.
I'm back at work tomorrow so won't get a chance to do anything till Monday when I finish night shift.
Will pull both rear hubs and see what happens.
Will post here the outComes. I love the car but this is really giving me the ****s!!!
Has anybody rebuilt a transfer, any special tools needed, the rebuild doesn't scare me but is it worth it?
Prices for exchange vary from 1100-3500k....makes it hard to decide what to do.
I'm thinking I might replace transfer and hubs.
Thinking about the rumbling noise the hubs make sense, transfer case as well.
The cars done 250ks plus and don't know history of components.
    Keep you posted
