Advice TD5 Auto with Avan Eurostar 594 or 608

    Hi folks

Well just sold the second van and now keen to purchase an Avan Eurostar slightly second hand or the lighter Liam HT full height van, will be looking at Jayco or any main brand. Generally just the two of use using a standard TD5 but unfortunately I have the 694's tyres which are a fraction taller than standard tyres. The weight range of these Van is empty around 1900K and so loaded in the 2400 all up. I'm pretty sure these full height vans are still within range of practical travelling for an accross australia trip. I have no desire to get rid of the disco as is a favourate. Or do I settle for the slightly lighter versions around 1600k empty to all up 2000k full (sorry about not using ATM GVM etc).

Just looking for some advice from the members as to whether I'll regret purchasing a van this size for the car. Don't mind going slower and hills will be a problem with the current tyre dia (about 1 inch greater in dia).
No interest in chiping as I have the 00 model anyway.

Thanks in advance, just idea of cruising speed and any advice really.

    Hey mousie.
I tow a 23ft Reteat Daydrean caravan with a GVM of 2300kg's. Sure my D2a has a few mods, but it tows the van quite well considering its size and weight. Sure, I slow down on the hills and I do need to keep an eye on the EGT's. But I can usually manage to sit in the 90-100km/h range on the highway. A van with an ATM of around 2000kg should not bother your car too much. Just look at fitting an after market auto transmission cooler and change fluid regularly. Helper air bags in the rear coil springs are a huge advantage also. PS: You can still chip it.

Thanks for this and agree would put in a set of polly bags in the rear springs to help out. At least I can go to 2300 all up knowing others can do this. My fear was sitting at 80K and regretting the journey all the way. Mind you we plan on heading over to WA from Brisbane so ranges are few and open spaces for ppl overtaking etc.

Personally, I find the torque converter horrible to driving and especially towing - doesn't lock up when it should, resulting in higher revs, more fuel usage, not being able to use the low down torque and the engine can't be used to slow down the vehicle by dropping back a gear.
I've got an Ashcroft upgrade on it's way, which apparently helps solve these issues.

If your worried about the TD5's power - easy to upgrade that (up the boost, intercooler, turbo boost box, ECU tune, VNT, EGR removal, exhaust work, etc.)!

I tow my 1.5t boat, no dramas at all. I'm running tyres 3" larger and 4" higher suspension setup. Sits on 110km/h on the highway without any issues. Just have to watch EGT on the hills, not helped by my current tune being too rich.

Thanks folks for the help and ended up putting a deposit on an Avan with shower / toilet dual wheels. The tare is only 1630 and I must admit I didn't realise the difference to the Jayco that I have had two in the past. The walls are that smooth 'stuff' and not a fiberglass mix of some sort, rather a thin sheet of alimimium ply hence the weight difference. ball is up to 140 downforce (past were only 100) so will be able to comment on that small differences given I've had them sitting behind discos for well over 20K klms.

Thanks on the Pyrometer as I didn't know they existed until this thread and a quick search on ebay.
