    D2a traction control on/off

Still deciding which year Disco 2 to purchase and had a few questions.

Want D2a for CDL, just wondering if CDL activation completely or partially disengages traction control?

    cheers

On 2003 and 2004 MY D2's locking the CD changes the ETC programming to account for the 50/50 torque split between front and rear axles. From the information I've come across it appears the revised programming allows increased wheel spin before activating ETC.

The pre-2003MY d2's disable the ETC if the vehicle is started with the CDL locked.

You can do a wire cut mod to prevent the ETC being disabled but it is't ideal. If this is done the SLABS activates ETC earlier than necessary applying braking when a single wheel slips, and I suspect this contributes to the bad wrap ETC gets in some quarters.

I'm running a late revision of the SLABS ECU (fitted to the 2004 D2) in my 2000 D2 and have found the locked cdl + traction control to be fantastic. Driving tracks with deep sand sections in the Mallee recently the ETC was only activating in the softest sections.

    Cheers

    Ahh cheers,

Actually I was keen to be able to disengage traction control or at least have the choice to have it on or off (off for a more pure driving experience). Maybe I should be looking at a Defender

How about Diff Locks how do they effect the ETC?

    many thanks

If you really felt the need to disable the ETC you can pull the TC relay, but to be honest I have never seen the need. Or you could just buy a D1.

Take a look at this video.

and another edit of the same event

Compare the how the defenders and D2s handle being cross-axled, and tell me if you still reckon ETC is a bad idea.

Diff locks work in such a way that there is no need for the ETC to operate. ATB/TruTrac diffs are apparently very effective in combination with the ETC.

TC and a locked CDL provide excellent motivation,, not quite two lockers, but not far off.

Learn how to drive with TC - the TC in different vehicles reacts differently so requires different driving techniques. My Freelander was the first model landrover to be fitted with four channel TC and as such requires quite a few revs to activate it. My RRS has a much more modern system and does not need much in the way of thottle to get it going but it does need stability control turned off to get TC to work correctly (DSC limits engine response).

From observation the D2 would fit somewhere between the two vehicles.

I've edited this short segment covering the D2 out of a much longer doco that I found up on youtube.

The advice is to maintain throttle input when wheel slip occurs rather than lifting off. The segment on ETC is at 1:20, but the whole thing is under 4 minutes long.

Thanks for posting up that last one Offtrack. The first part I hadnt seen. My early threads on my 02 before I retrofitted CDL kept saying stay on the throttle - sometimes a fair bit. Every time you back off the computer shuts off the ABS pulsating. I had a lot of fun off road and in the sand with ETC alone - together with CDL its better.

Just look at the bits the D2 was doing in that vid - without CDL - pretty good stuff.

    Cheers

I have had D2's for many years with & without CDL.I have found the TC to be excellent in ALL conditions, even in soft sand, where it gets it's share of knockers.Keeping the pedal down is the clue to getting it to work well.

Compared with my brother's D1,there is no comparison at all.
Compared to a mates front & rear locked patrol,it will keep up almost all the time.If the lockers are not on,the D2 kills it.

As for the D4,gotta get out & play, but the reports are it is better than the D2 again.
