    Smile oil in ecu 2004 td5 discovery

    hey guys.
    i have just bought a 2004 td5 discovery manual.
    i have found it very under powered and wont go over 3000 rpm.
    after searching forums i found out i have oil in my ecu.
    i have purchased a new wiring loom but am wanting to know if i will need to replace the ecu.

    it has been suggested that some of the following may be true.
    can anyone advise please if they have had similar trouble.

    a scanner wont read to find out problem due to the oil in the ecu i guess.

    Turbo over boosting and the ECU shuting the system down.
    Broken/faulty boost switch(it's next to the ar cond. compresor).
    Hoses from the intercooler may be delaminating internally and blocking air flow.

    Some feedback

    When you say oil in the ECU, is this at the connector, or in the ECU box itself? Either way, clean it out, put in the new injector harness and see what changes. You should get a positive result from this change, with the engine running smoother. The oil in the harness causes the signals to the injectors cause the misfire. You may (will) have to clean the connector end of the ECU several times as the oil in the engine harness will migrate through still over time. Some people have taken the engine harness off and left it to hang to drain out the oil, but it appears that this takes several days / week or two.....

    As for the other stated problems, is there any evidence, or is someone scare mongering? You can pull a turbo hose off and see if it is delaminating - the one from the intercooler to the intake is the easiest to take off. Turbo overboost seems to result in surging, with the engine revving up and down by a few hundred rpm, when over a certain rpm - some have said 3000, others indicate a bit lower, with one recent post saying they had a problem at 2300 rpm - under heavy loads I can see this happening, as it can be at 1.5x atmo even at this low an rpm. Check that the wastegate actuator can move - do a search on aulro.com to see how to check, but its the actuator you can see near the turbo, with the adjustable rod.

    What scanner are you using? You will need one specific to the LR, as the Disco is not OBD II compliant. Quite a few members have diagnostic tools (nannocom etc) to help determine what is going on - there is a list / map available on aulro.com (another search), with several on the Gold Coast from memory. Perhaps attend a GC club meeting and have a chat with some of the guys - club members are usually pretty helpful.

    Boost switch - will have to get someone else's advice on this, as I haven't delved into this.

    thanks for the feed back guys.
    the oil is in the plug of the red end.
    i havent pulled apart the ecu itself.
    not sure if if should or not.
    the other info was obtained from 4x4 earth forum.someone replied to the same post as here.
    i bought a new harness from ebay,its coming from uk so hopefully it will arrive soon.
    looking forward to replacing it and hopefully getting some power.
    i could even get up my 10 metre long driveway with my wife and 2 kids in the car.
    thats how dosmal the power is.

    Smile Other things to consider

    Consider other issues as well that may be causing the lack of power and rpm - blocked exhaust, maf sensor, egr issues, turbo ?!! (hope not).

    I'd recommend that once you sort out the current issue/s, consider getting an mild ECU remap from Tombie (or similar), unless you already have one. You will need to synch up the details with him. There should be (will be) little to no turbo lag, more power, better fuel economy if you use the vehicle the same as previous etc. and only use the power for good, not evil.....

    Oil in the harness seems to mostly result in rough running, not low revs per se, if you follow the threads on here.

    low revs have been due to collapse I/c hose or failing fuel pump

    so if de-oiling you harness doesn't fix the low power I would be looking at I/C hose first (cheapest), then fuel pump, seems that fuel pumps can go south anywhere between 120-220k km.

    dont get overloaded with all the other maybe's, most of the outcomes on the forum from your problem type seems to be the simpler ones.

    Tombie is another member, based in SA. I sent my ECU to him on a Sunday, had it back by the Friday.

    Tombie is now off the scene. I got a remap from TD5inside (ex Portugal) on the recommendation of another member here - $340 special member price if you have someone who can upload it eg nanocom
