    Noisy Fuel Pump

    Hi,

I have attached a link to a you-tube video that shows a D2 fuel pump that is behaving exactly the same as mine.

    I own a 2001 D2 TD5 176k.

I was wondering whether my pump is about to die, is it using more fuel than normal. Will I be stuck on the side of the road soon etc. Should I replace ASAP etc etc etc.

Any comments will be much appreciated....

    Cheers

I don't think a noisy pump will affect fuel economy at all.

As for the noisy-ness and likelihood of imminent failure -- I can't help. I've had a noisy pump may be 3 or 4 times and always changed the pump before it failed. Too gutless to risk it! They are cheap if you order from the UK and since you've got the top open most of the work in changing it is done!

    Bryan.

ps: My first one was so noisy I could hear it at 100km/hr from inside the car...

    Thanks guys.

I am considering buying a fuel pump from the UK but there is also a guy in Ringwood Victoria selling them for $265.00 plus post and I think thats about as good as it gets.

Maybe I didn't write it but this is not my video it was made by someone else and I just found it on you-tube.

My pump does exactly the same as the one in the video and my one started this noise last week and the tank was half full.

( I have not driven alot since then) ( I have been intermitently using our other car).

My pump makes this noise when the tank is full as-well.( I filled up on Saturday to see if it would make a difference.

Any comments are much appreciated ..........Thanks..

The pump that is making the noise is an almost new pattern part sold by Allmakes 4x4. Based on the selling price the one selling for $265 on ebay will be of similar quality. They are cheap Chinese copies.

You are far better off spending a bit extra and buying either a Siemens/VDO OEM pump or genuine from the UK. It's very likely to save you money in the long term.

Bearmach are a distributor. They sell both pattern parts and OEM. Chinese tend to be about $280-300, and OEM $580-600ish.

The following post contains some the best advice you are likely to get on fuel pumps.

I purchased my new fuel pump from british parts in the UK for about $300 delivered. It was the VDO brand which is the OEM supplier and it took about 3 or 4 days to arrive.

Sounds fairly normal to me - sound is increased with the inspection hatch open though. I can hear my pump before startup and it sounds very much like that and has since new.

    Hi guys.

Well I decided to buy a bearmach pump from wicken 4x4 in the UK it is a pattern part but they swear they have no real issues from there clients.

I just simply couldnt afford an original and I purchased before NANKAS posted so I was unable to PM him to ask for more details and I certainly couldnt find an OEM branded pump for that price and I searched for weeks before I settled on the one I have.

It cost $170 includeing delivery and it will still take some tiem to get here.

Several people have commented that the noise the pump makes is normal so I may just keep my new one as a spare until such a time I get performance or driveability issues.

    Anyway got to run.

Hope you all had a respectful and pleasant ANZAC day.. Our diggers would have wanted it that way.

    Cheers
