Fuel pump level thing in the actual tank sounds like. (sorry bout the lack of technical jargon). if thats been knocked etc and isn't set/calibrated right it isn't gonna give you the right reading I believe.
i have a d2 4ltr i have replaced a tank unit and still the guage comes half way up i have had the guage tested and it works fine
any ideas

I haven't pulled it out of my d2 before but have on another car. With that car I was able to manipulate the level and this would change the gauge (slowly) according to the level I set it at. I assume that the d2 must have a similar setup?
