    Towing a bigger caravan

I'm am looking at buying a newer larger caravan to replace our small light weight windsor rapid. I acknowledge that going bigger and heavier will adversly effect fuel, but was wondering if anybody who has done the same type of thing could give me some feedback/advice on how adversly their economy and handeling was effected. I'm sorry it's a broad brush post I was hoping for some advice on, if the surface area on the front of a van is the only major contributor to loss of economy or does the length and weight of a bigger van also knock the economy around.

At speed the frontal area will determine the drag and that will knock your fuel economy. In stop start traffic and up slow hills it will be the weight. The length will have little effect other than movement with side winds. Have heard people say that side winds also knock their fuel economy.

Gday you do not say if you have the TD5 or V8, we have the TD5 and owned a 2.5t 17.6ft (internal) Kedron, we did around 80 to 85K with the van on the back and travelled from Brisbane, south to Camberra and Brisbane, north to Cooktown and Brisbane to Winton and all places inbetween. On every trip we averaged around the 16.6 Lt/100klm and this was travelling at the speed limits not the i must do 80 for fuel economy stuff, we found that travelling at 100 to 105 was gave better economy than the slower speed.

    Hope this is helpfull

How many torques does a chipped TD5 make anyway?
    I think I need around 400

Buggar that would make any trip painfull. When we did the Cairns trip friends came along with a petrol cruiser on gas towing a camper trailer, by the end of the trip we had still paid less than them for fuel than they did for gas, he couldnt get anymore than 300k out of a tank of gas .

Well standard which ours still was 345 from new i would say i could have lost a couple by now

    Pedro

Youve seen my rig, never used more than 14l/100k. Sitting just under speed limit, 95-100k/h.
2t (1600 unloaded) D2a, TD5 chipped, auto. and I think about 120Kwasps up from about 98k original, for your question about torques. Had a pamphlet from Davis somewhere but cant find it now.

    cheers
