My repair of the original (by specialists Bensons here in sydney) lasted about 18 months. Once the wafers inside and their "sleeves" have been worn enough to cause a problem it doesn't take long to play up again.

Locksmith said as much when he got me going roadside after the first failure.

    he was right of course.

Pull ignition barrel on Discovery 2

My thanks to all those who have pioneered and posted all the information about the ignition lock. I used all that today to pull out the barrel and remove three bent brass wafers that were causing me grief getting the key in and out. The whole job took about two hours - the biggest delay was working out how to remove the pin that keeps the barrel in the lock housing; in the end I just drilled it out and replaced it with a small self-tapper screw. I also left out the ball bearing at the mouth of the key slot - it effectively just acted as a cam and blocked the key going in and out of the lock. Now the key goes in sweetly, turns over with minimal pressure and exits just as smoothly. Perfect. I also cut a slot into each of the two 8mm bolts so I could replace them (see photo) with a screwdriver. Worked.

    anti-theft problem ??

    Thanks to all,
I have just replaced the barrel with a second hand barrel and key... (using the replacement key in the original fob(remote).....no problem but now when I attempt to start, I have the "S" and the "M" warning lights on and flashing and the vehicle will not start, just a quick click of the starter and then nothing (and the alarm warning light comes on).
I hope someone can tell me how to remedy this problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Ken
