The whole job took about two hours - the biggest delay was working out how to remove the pin that keeps the barrel in the lock housing; in the end I just drilled it out and replaced it with a small self-tapper screw. I also left out the ball bearing at the mouth of the key slot - it effectively just acted as a cam and blocked the key going in and out of the lock. Now the key goes in sweetly, turns over with minimal pressure and exits just as smoothly. Perfect. I also cut a slot into each of the two 8mm bolts so I could replace them (see photo) with a screwdriver. Worked.
