JUst picked up my D2a from being serviced and was advised my auto is leaking from there torque converter seal area and the transfer case is leaking from intermediate shaft O rings and input seal.

Cost to repair was quoted at around $2000..... OUCH... as apparently there is about 12 hours labour to rip everything out and put back... the cost of parts is minimal at best.

Is this correct??? or am i better off trying to rip these out at home and taking in to be repaired??

Advice would be greatly appreciated as do not have $2000 odd to fix...and don't want a stuffed auto..

Sounds about right labour wise as it is a very labour intensive job with actual parts being a minor cost.

Gotta say though that 12 hours labour at $166/hour to give an approximate total of $2K is a bit steep. My mate just had the same done with his Defender - Not an auto of course but same amount of effort to remove T-case and gearbox etc, re-seal then re-install everything and he paid $1200. Took the shop a good 8 hours of labour which included seals, oil and some environmental charges.

Perhaps you might want to seek another quote??

Well I'm now based in Canberra now so if you can suggest someone i should just I will be all ears... $166 an hour is extremely steep hence my post..

Richie Cole is the proprietor of HUME Off Road -a good bloke and very proud of the quality of his workshop. His last job he did for me was $110/hour

I might add that he's ex Army RAEME - has 2 kids in the Forces both currently serving O/S and is a top bloke willing to go above and beyond to help where possible...and no, I'm not Army - I'm ex Navy :-)

I used Award Diff & Gearbox for my defender - full reco TC & G/box including new 5th gear cogs, drilling to improve oil flowback, new clutch, rear main crankshaft seal, T seal & rocker cover seal, just over $3000...shame I wrote it off 3 months later. I'm told most other LR places just send the units to these guys for servicing?

If you got that work done with the list and quote for extra work done from a Canberra specialist - I bet I know where you got that from.

I replaced my TC and all seals here in my garage took two full weekends, doing it straight would be at least 10-12 hours if you have all the gear a know how. The price you quoted sounds a bit steep more like $1500 . All the seal cost about $30. Oils about $250 Tranmax Z is the best.

I did mine and pulled auto and tfr as one, from under the car on stands in <3hours, same to refit. Bloody heavy but used a jack and made a flat plate and used ratchet straps to keep it on the plate.
