Thread: How much to fix..... OUCH!!

I think people are a bit to anal about oil leaks on landy's. As Rocky88 said, if the oil leak aint that bad, just keep an eye on the levels. My auto was leaking at the spot I installed a vdo oil temp sensor. I thought it was leaking heaps but I could only add about 100ml of oil. Similarly I took my disco into my mechanic with a leaking front diff seal. One of his staff's disco had been leaking for over 50,000kms and he'd only added oil 3 times! All depends on how much oil is leaking out though eh??

Shame you re-located to Canberra.

There's your first problem - you took your car to a mechanic for a service. Those people will always find something wrong with your car just to make you come back and spend more money.

Just forget about it and keep topping up oil. Get the leak fixed sometime in the future if you ever need gearbox repaired, that way you'll hit two birds with one stone.

I also have a tiny small leak coming out of the manual box from the front of the bellhousing, which I'll wory about sometime in the future when I need a new clutch.

If you listen to everything your mechanic tells you, you'll get stuck in a vicious cycle of spending money on stuff that doesn't have to be fixed and you'll end up broke.

Yep, I have been topping up the oil in the transfer case since 130,000kms when the intermediate shaft leak started. Now I am at 306,000kms and just keep an eye on the level and the size of the drips. I reckon its about 300ml per 10,000kms but it looks a lot more.

D2a 2003 TD5 Auto

I got told the ATF coolant was seeping in my D2 Td5, however this wasn't by a mechanic. (Cheers Slunnie, more stuff to spend money on )
Got it back from R/worthy and they pointed out front diff pinion seal leaking, coolant leaking from somewhere, seems to be on the drivers side of the engine dripping down.
Should I bother with the pinion seal? Or just "keep putting oil in it"

Since hes got an AUTO in there sparky when the auto blows out the front seal and rapes the rest of the box from following your "advice" will you be willing to fork out for a share in the repair bill?

as for paying $80 for a td5 gasket? whoever billed you for that saw you coming unless it was a head gasket.

Oh on the Tcase leak... since you seem to know better than a mechanic, whys it leaking? is it because the Orings failed or is it because the shaft has fretted in the casing and is now out of position?

If its the latter whats the long term consequence of continually running the Tcase in that condition? (other than you have to keep topping the oil up)
