    Arrow Baja Rack

A mate sent me this link the other day - Land Rover Discovery 2 Roof Top Tent Rack - 4x4 Equipment - it's about the closest rack I have seen to the Rover Racks from the USA. Thought I'd share incase anyone was interested.

I notice it weighs 45kg. I was under the impression that the max weight on a d2 roof was 50kg. Not room for much more than the shovel then...

don't confuse the weight the rack can carry with the weight the roof can carry - check your manual. Dont ask me why they make a rack that exceeds the roof's capacity..... check here: http://www.discovery2.co.uk/download...overy2_acc.pdf

I reckon most steel racks would be around that weight. I have stood on my roof rack with out any issues...

First impressions were a nice looking rack.
Ruled it out as soon as I saw its empty weight.
Pity because everything else looks the goods. Now if it was made from Aluminium......

    cheers

What is the weight of the similar Rover Rack and Saftey Devices rack which is also made from steel?

The weight of the roof load (rack + contents) is set with respect to a number of issues including the structural concerns for the roof and the imact of a heavy load affecting the vehicle's centre of gravity.

In terms of a static load, the roof can no doubt support a load of a couple of hundred Kg: roof rack 45kg, tent 50kg 2 persons (say 160kg) =255kg.
This is fine when parked in a camp...

Now consider pounding over corrugations on a winding road with rack/tent/spare wheel and (say) 40L fuel on the rack... around 150kg 'pendulum' on the roof ...leads to a lot of instability and the thumping of the load on roof welds is a prime cause of cracking.

LR advice on roof racks is generally to halve the recommended maximum roof load weight in rough conditions.

Far better off towing a small trailer and getting as much of the load off the roof as possible IMHO
