Hi, I just went out to the shed to have a look at one I had out of the car.
 
If you come in from above the front tail shaft with a 10mm spanner on the nut it swings out away from the gearbox about a 1/4 of a turn. On one transfer I had I herd a clunk noise. You then need to grab the flange or tail shaft and move it back and forth until it engages. It should all move pretty easily. Good luck.
