    TD5 Engine cover

Do any of you guys run your TD5 without the engine cover on? My captured nut has broken off so I've removed it.

    Hello,
Had my engine cover off almost since I had the car 4 years now, I think it is for keeping noise down I could be wrong. ....

leave the engine cover off, it does more harm than good,
while your at it take the turbo heat sheild off too,

    both a waste of time.

with them off you'll actually be able to see an engine and be able to spot any loose manifold nuts, coolant, oil or fuel leaks before they become a problem.

As for noise reduction, makes no perceptible difference in a defender.

Mine is off at the minute as I have just done my manifold studs, EGR removal, I will leave it off for another week, to keep an eye on things.

I did notice some extra engine noise, but it was marginal, and it could have been because I was listening specifically for it?

Access is hugely improved with it off, and the turbo heat shield is a real PITA to get off,(I have dual batteries), I think I will notch the support bracket that bolts on to the turbo, for easier furure removal.

Mines been off for a while too. One day when I clean up the garage and need to find somewhere to put it then I'll probably put it back on... if I haven't lost the bolts for it.

Mine has been off for months - I enjoy the ever so slightly increased noise. I know dswatts has had his off for much longer. Next step - remove turbo heat shield.

You lot inspired me tonight. Oil and filter change and the cover has gone back on. Doesn't cost me anything, but the engine will hopefully be a bit quieter.

Mine makes more noise with it on - oil filler flap rattles, moves on the rubber grommets and everything in contact with it rattles. (2000 D2)
Fed up with trying to stop it shaking, I am taking it off next oil change.
