    TD5 heart skipped a beat

Hi guys, was literally in the middle of nowhere when I stopped the car for a pee break. Turned the key till the dash lights came on, turned to start and nothing.

No locking / unlocking ability, no radio etc, dead.

I then popped the bonnet and fiddled around with the battery terminal etc, but nothing stood out.

Put the covers etc back on, closed the bonnet and everything was back to normal. The preset radio stations stayed, but the clock and trip meter reset.
This is the second time this has happened although no pattern.

The only change has been the addition of driving lights which are working fine, and no fuses are blown.

Any suggestions to have a look at, or any similar experiences.

When you turned the key to start did you her anything at all? A click? Or absolutely nothing. Is your fuel pressure regulator leaking? If it is the fuel leaks onto the starter solenoid causing a non starter.

Other than that from 5 years of sucking up the info on this site I would get your battery "load tested" on an analogue tester (not a digital tester) at your local auto elec.

Lots of wacko stuff is caused by a dicky battery.

    Cheers

Everything fired up when it I turned it to lights, but lost all power when trying to turn over the engine, no clicks nothing. It was like the whole car had no power. At that stage nothing electric worked, and turned the key back to the dash lights nothing. If it was electric, no go.

Probably spent a minute under the bonnet checking fuses, connections etc.

Went back and turned the key and lights were back, then turned the engine on first kick over of the starter motor (back to normal).

I never have any trouble starting the car, always fires and starts very quickly and consistently.

Someone else posted something similar here too recently. Happened to me too, once, and never again.

    Sorry, not much help!

Poor or loose earth connections at places like the alternator and starter have caused simlar.

Search for info on earth connections.

Key fob battery dead or dying and it happens with the key in the ignition without the ignition on. Car no longer recognises key transponder. Happened to me.

It's happened to me a few times and was a loose positive terminal.

It can be on, but not tight and has enough current to power everything, except the high current loads of the starter. When you turn to start, you hear a click and then everything goes dead and stays dead until you fiddle around and tighten the terminal.

Had a GQ that did dodgy things after I replaced a broken earth wire. When I replaced it I got power steering fluid between the surfaces of the terminals. Engine wasn't earthed to battery, causing starter and fuel solenoid issues.

On my first D2a some times we had a similar problem, till I cleaned the earth point on the starter moter - didnt have problem after that.

(I should do it on the current one, preventative maintenance and all that)
