    D2 Td5 buy with head done or not???

    I have owned various Land Rovers old and new.
    Recently l have decided to go for another D2 Td5.
    Knowing the usual issues do rare their ugly head, when a D2 reaches say 250,000kms and above, do you buy a car with the Head/Head gasket done or not?
    Do you take the risk with this not done??
    The golden question for sure, but l decided to wait and find a car that had alot of the issues done.
    I bought a 99 D2 td5 Manual with 282km in Casino NSW, for $5K in nice condition.
    Did need brakes done and a few general Maint issues, but the bonus was the 20k ago the Head etc was completely done at a cost of nearly $3,800.
    Also new radiator, front prop shaft, fuel regulator etc.
    It did also need a set of tyres, which l managed to pu a good set off ebay.

    So golden question ??
    Nice clean 99 to 02 model for say $8-$12K without the Head done etc?
    Or a not so clean unit, but with most of the issues replaced or repaired?
    It took me a while to find one like l have explained, but they do tend to come up from time to time.
    I also saw some really nice clean units without these items repaired or replaced.
    Does 250Km plus guarantee issues in the future as explained?? or???

    When I sold my D2a it had done 250K. The new owner had the gasket replaced because wanted to be sure the gasket didn't give trouble on his outback trips especially as I had informed him that it was a motor that still had plastic dowels but could take LR steel dowels. Whilst there was no sign of any problem, he told me that there was evidence of the head starting to walk, with the plastic dowels already distorted. He was very pleased that he decided to have the gasket replaced even though there was no outward sign because no damage had been done.

    Yes, up to a particular VIN, so I discovered after having bought it.

    I wasn't pleased to discover that because getting an engine with steel dowels was a prime reason for upgrading, having just destroyed the head on my '99. The D2as had been out for a while but the demand for manual 5-seaters with ACE was low so mine, purchased June 03, was one of the 1st delivered before Christmas 02 so had an early motor.

    Bummer. Mine is a manual, 5 seat, no ACE and I took delivery in June 04.

    Mine's VIN was 3A792377 and was within the last couple of hundred (IIRC) before engines with steel dowels were fitted.
